Internet download monitor.

Is it possible and if so, where is the best place to buy or download a monitor which will show me exactly how much data I am using for my internet usage? I have seen a few websites which I don't trust. I am ideally wanting a physical electronic monitor, much like the one's which you can buy for your electricity.

Thanks in advance.

Your isp may have a page with details, your router probably maintains a count - depends on model, or you could use netmonitor amongst others.

You would probably be able to get an unlimited download at a cheaper price from a different provider, if your isp is charging you extra for it, not worth paying for a box to do it.

Not a separate box, but you could try netmeter for free

If your router supports SNMP, then I'd recommend >MRTG<

ThinkBroadband is another. Recommended by BT, lol. If you are unsure of some websites install Web of Trust. It's free of course and checks the reputation of every page you visit. Big red screen appears on dodgy ones.

Download networx - I use it on my home PC and it's great

Reports traffic inbound + outbound for each day / each user

There's also another, think it was called Internet Download Monitor or something. It's graphics was a little orange tank that fills up on your usage

Perfect for a standalone machine, alas no use whatsoever if more than one user is connected to the modem/router.

I can't remember reading a post where it said it was for multiple users. I can understand the bit about using a killawatt meter for the wall but I don't think any technology like that is in use. It would have to run some form of pass through to the router to monitor it

There is hardware that can monitor the WAN side, but I doubt the OP wants to spend that sort of money.

As for the multiple users, I was simply making the OP aware that software that can only monitor a single network card will not report what goes through the WAN if another user, computer, games console, etc should connect.

But the current networx has a 'synchronize' feature, tick the box on all the pcs, can't remember where to find it though, 'advanced'?

'cos it don't work on Linux.
