have to leave job

hi all this is my first post and hopefully you can help with a bit of a problem i am having.
Basically i have worked for a company for over 3 years and until 6 weeks ago something happened very big which was enough to put me into deep depression and currently taking anti depressant tablets. I have tried and tried to cope with whats going on and my body has just come to the point where i have to go i am struggling to carry on and cant even think normally and it is now effecting home life where i have my wife and 5 year old daughter.
coming out of a job where i have no job to go into is something stupid i know but its my own mind which just cannot cope and on the brink of a breakdown.
what i am getting at is where would i stand about the benefits side of things when i come out of this job. As everything stands i would have enough money to keep me going with bills for the next 3 months until i would have to sell things so im trying to find out if i would get help.
Thanks for reading this and its took me some time to have the courage writing something like this on a forum.

I think your first port of call is your GP, if you are this stressed you need help and I expect you would end up getting signed off to, so that should help you short term as you would be getting paid by your employer and still have a job. Don't resign from your job, seek help and see if things work themselves out
Opinions are like bottoms - We all have one, just some stink more than others

Service Attributable Pension - War Pension - War Pensioners Unemployability Supplement - War Pensioners Invalidity Allowance - War Pensioners Comforts Allowance - War Pensioners Mobility Allowance - War Pensioners Child Allowance - Housing Benefit - Council Tax Benefit
  • if your going to make a claim to benefits then you have 2 choices
    1. claim jobseekers allowance you should qualify for contribution based jobseekers for 6 months but as you left your employer they will write out to your prev employer asking for reasons why, and it depends on if this comes back would depend on if you will be able to continue to claim jobseekers, they would also ask you for your reasons to take into account also. if they fail to reply to the letter then jsa would continue regardless.
2 claim employment support allowance if you have a medical condition that is preventing you from work, you would need a med cert from your gp from day one of your claim and you would also be subject to a medical assesment at around 13 weeks into your claim and the result on that would depend if you continue to claim this or not.

    hope this helps???????????

I agree with intranicity, please get yourself to your GP and ask to be signed off work at least this will give you some breathing space. Mental illness can move very quicky from stress and anxiety to full on depression so get the help you need now.

Your JSA will be sanctioned if you leave voluntarily unless you have good reason, i.e where you would win a constructive dismissal case. If your illness is due to a bad situation at work get in touch with your union and also ask for a referal to occupational health, both of these have helped me greatly in the past.

Due to your lack of earnings you may get extra child tax credits, rent rebate and council tax rebate, if you do get one of these then you may also get items on the NHS free, school meals etc.

    Good luck with everything.

As other posts have advised, don't resign from your job. You would get no JSA at all for probably six months. Go to your doctor and see what they have to say about your current health/mind conditions. IF they deem you to be unfit for work, go on the sick (company/state?) for however long the illness continues. The company MAY finish you on health grounds (hopefully in your case). You can then continue to claim ESA until your Doctor passes you fit for work. Then you will be able to put in a claim for JSA.

I'm advising this route because I think you are being genuine in your reasons for wanting to quit. Finding a new job will be VERY difficult when you are fit but maybe your health is more important.
