Plasma or LCD TV? Or normal one?

Our Philips telly is going on the blink again 2 years after we replaced it under the Sale of Goods Act when the original one went on the blink after the same time! Now that we've a telly for 4 years we're probably on dodgy ground to get the 2nd faulty one replaced. Especially as we're dealing with Comet!

So we're going to look into how much a new one will cost. So what's the difference between plasma and LCD? Would we look archaic if we have a normal telly? What should we be looking for? Don't want a big one - the aforementioned telly is only 26". But would probably increase that to a 28".

Also less inclinded to spend a lot of money on one seeing as they only last 2 years or so anyway. BTW the problem on both TVs is the colour tubes. The first one went completely and this one you can tell it's on its way out as the colour is beginning to fade out occasionally. Philips aren't interested and I can't see that this is a common problem for Philips TVs as I've done a quick google.

    It depends

Do you have SKY HD / XBOX 360 or Intend on buying a PS3?
    If so get a LCD.

But word of warning - PLASMAs and LCDs are only better if you have a HD source such as SKY HD, if not just get a bog standard TV because the picture quality will be much better than on a plasma or lcd.

I think this should be posted in "Techie" or "I wanna buy or do it" as you'll get a response from techies. I'd recommend the techie forum

Ok. We have Sky+ but we don't subscribe or watch the HD versions of the channels. I'll post the same question in Techie too. Cheers.

is space an issue in your room?

the price of lcd is alot cheaper than 12 months ago, you can get a top 32 incher for £600.

you can have it on a stand, hand it on the wall, move it aound without the aid of a friend or a crane.

if you have no small children i would deffo say an lcd tv, the biggest that your room will have ( bear in mind you need to be about 8 foot away from lcd tvs).

when you get a tv, you always end up 3 months later, wishing you got the bigger one or the lcd or what ever.

i got a toshiba 37 incher lcd 2 months ago and have never been happier with a tv. it is on the wall and looks great.

Errr No that just isn't true....if you buy a quality LCD TV the picture quality is amazing even without a HD Source.

I brought a LCD 32" and I love it. But to be truthful the picture from our CRT telly is better but the LCD just looks so nice. Sometimes the picture blows you away (we have sky not HD) other times its slightly blocky. The football is not so good on a LcD as a normal telly. I think again when items move quickly the picture gets blocky.

Im really happy with the LCD and my sons getting a Xbox for Xmas so I can't wait to see what thats like. Films are really good on it too.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

This is a subject thats been debated before on here.

In my opinion no LCD or Plasma can yet match a good CRT picture.

Take a look on here http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php where this debate also rages.

Depending on the source, the screen size and how far away from the TV you are!
