Check out http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-diamond-club-486/ for endless discussion on how to extract the best value from BMI's scheme.
IMHO the best value can be obtained if you combine with additional miles and go for a "miles+cash" deal on long haul business class.
For short haul economy, you may well be better off with a low cost airline. Sure the tax will be the same, but if booking ahead the base fare can be peanuts. Whilst you may only get the cheapest low cost airline deals by booking ahead, that is often true when getting "free" tickets with airmiles where availability is restricted.
BMI are part of the Star Alliance grouping which means you can use the miles on a number of other airlines - Swiss, Lufthansa (who own BMI), Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines etc etc.0
