But you are an experienced user who knows the kind of sites that can be dodgy. The average IE7 user does not-and probably depends on something like McAfee for their AV protection.

It might be worth installing SpywareBlaster and Spypot - Search & Destroy, which can block certain sites/malware before it's installed. You can also do an online virus scan with Trend Housecall.

Using Firefox would be more secure (than IE), and if you install Adblock Plus and subscribe to the the malware domains list, you'll have another layer of security.

    Thanks.

What exactly is this and would downloading it cause any incompatibilities? I use Vista Basic, Chrome and, as mentioned, have Avira installed already.

Id 2nd combofix to run, and post the log after

My thanks to all who responded.

I've asked questions on other sites and it seems that the so-called 'access allowed' 2nd detection was actually Avira 'allowing' itself access to scan the file in question, not me allowing the trojan any access.

Confusing or what? People will never believe me when I tell them how important the use of unambiguous language is...

It's been recommended to me that I do a HijackThis scan. Is this the same kind of thing as Combofix? Any thoughts?

    That is truly bizarre.

Are you saying that, in one instance, "Access denied" means that you personally made a positive and human decision to deny access to the trojan whereas, in the second instance, "Access allowed" means the Avira program gave itself authority to do something?

Completely unacceptable clash of terminology. You could easily have been misled into believing that the trojan had been allowed to implant itself.

Let me guess: either Avira is a foreign firm which takes little care over its English or it is peopled by nerds who are unconcerned about the fact that most of their customers don't have the same level of interest as themselves in techno-babble... or both.

Use sandboxie with your browsers. Then just delete the sandbox when you have finished.

Any 'Nasties' you may have picked up will be flushed away with no chance of them having infiltrated your PC

Run both, and post both logs (do not act on anything in the logs though)
