Thinking of buying an amber teething necklace for my baby - do they work/safe?

I am thinking of getting an amber teething necklace for my 5 month old baby who is permanently grumpy at the moment, red cheeked and is chewing relentlessly on his hands and drooling a lot.

Has anyone tried one? I have been recommended them for baby teething by so many people but I have a few questions;

1) How safe are they - are they actually for putting in babies mouth to chew on?

2) Do they actually work?

They're not cheap (the ones I've seen online are £10+), so I only want to buy one if they are safe and work. Any reviews or recommendations of where I can get one (if I decide to go ahead) would be greatly appreciated!

I got one and it did nothing. They aren't for chewing on, the baby's body heat warms the Amber which is supposed to activate some kind of pain relieving resin that absorbs through the skin. Or something....???

  • Or something! Amber emits an analgesic radiation and eases the pain. :rotfl::rotfl:Hmmm. I had one and used it for both of mine, even used it on myself a couple of times (toothache and headache) and it did work, actually, though I lent it to a friend's child and they didn't rate it at all.

The Catholic church forbade the practise of pregnant women wearing amber amulets on the grounds that they were "denying God the screams of labour pain" :eek:so maybe they've known about it for years?

I got mine from Green Baby but they're available for around a fiver nowadays. Sold it on ebay afterwards.
    They look cute too. :p
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • Have you tried a damp frozen face cloth for baby to chew on? My little girl loved this!

i saw at work this week a safety warning about these necklaces and will post a link when i get access to my work email. the warning came from a reputable source (not sure if it was ROSPA??) and included 3 warnings, one for these necklaces, one for corded blinds, and the 3rd about a baby who strangled itself on the baby monitor eletrical cord.

the content of the email states that apart from choking risk, these also pose a strangulation risk, and the advice was to strongly discourage the use of these necklaces.

We had an amber teething necklace for DS. It reduced his saliva production, and helped with the nasty nappies. It was obvious if one of us had forgot to put it on after a sleep.

He wore it until he was over 2. I can't praise it enough.

Oh god, I can't believe that anyone would give a baby a beaded necklace to wear. It's a choking hazard!:eek:
What if the beads came apart from the necklace? Or the baby got caught up in it?

As for amber having "analgesic" properties, I don't think so. Amber is fossilised tree resin, there are no proven benefits of wearing it, analgesic or otherwise. You may as well hang a evil eye round your baby's neck to ward off the nasty teething spirits! :rotfl::rotfl:

When babies are teething, they will chew anything they can. Get some soft plastic toys, (my son had a Piglet as part of a Winnie the Pooh playset, his ears were chewed to death!) or a teething ring that you can put in the fridge.

Don't spend your money on something that is at best, a complete waste and at worst, a potential deathtrap. I can't believe that these things are for sale in the UK!
