I love the concept that banks MAKE anything, all they do is shuffle YOUR (my) money about, paying derisory rates to savers and ripping off customers given the chance (does a letter really cost £20?) they are no more than money lenders (and get thrown out of temples), anyone thinking they are there to help is seriously deluded, of course we have seen how good they are at handling thier own affairs.

mines safe, not in paper form, not invested in some dodgy company and not available to HMG either, any more i get is going to join it.

Northern Rock were advertising savings schemes today, ohhh yessssss.....lol

I know Icebank victims got compo, who paid that?....HMG? where do they get thier money from?.....oh yeah....taxation

Lots of rants against banks but no view on what has been the best investment over the last 30 years? Investing in shares is not the same as bankers getting their bonuses. I also happen to disagree with some of these bonuses - quite how 300 people in NatWest/RBS can justify a £1m plus bonus I'm not sure but that is not what we are talking about here.

OP, sorry for taking things off track. You can also invest in funds outside of an ISA so that may be an option if you still wanted investments and your wife's ISA was maxed out.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

And is it invested in things like Jupiter and different markets or is it just a savings vehicle?

It's up to you what funds you invest in - since you've got a bit of spare cash and have stated you're willing to take a bit of a risk, do your research and see what sorts of funds appeal to you. You've stated you've got another 20 years of work to go - is that your investing timeframe, or are you likely to need the funds back before then?
ISA entitlement is currently £10,200 of which you can put a maximum of £5100 in cash.

That will be going up for the new ISA year (starts 6th April) to £10680 total.
The "institutions" hate the thought of joe public holding gold as an investment, mainly because they would prefer you gave THEM your cash so THEY can invest it and cream it off for themselves

Indeed some countries restrict the amount of gold an indvidual may hold, for fear the holder can yield too much power

That's the thing I hate about goldbugs - the conspiracy theories and the overt suggestion that if you don't agree with them you're some sort of mindless cretin!
  • What sort of return are you looking for? Sorry amongst the rambling and arguing in this thread it must have been lost in translation

    Hi thanks for that,

yes i am hoping and expect to be able to leave the funds for 20 years albeit hopefully builiding on them.

As i mentioned in the original post i am new to this but hope to have something that as i get more unexpected bits of money to invest i can drop more into it. Although i am guessing there must be a time to stop putting in and just let it grow; or does that demonstrate my ignorance further :o
