dfs sofa broken

Where do i stand with a dfs sofa if it breaks?

I got a brand new sofa from them about 3 weeks ago. It's a corner sofa, suddenly without warning when my bf sat on 1 seat of it we heard a crack, we can't check whats wrong as its all sewen together, but now that seat is sunken more than the other 3.

He sat on the sofa normally, not like he threw himself on it or anything.

  • My husband & I decided to invest in a decent leather sofa & chairs, the idea being that they would last a long time & be more durable.
Mistake. the leather on one seat on the sofa must have been defective because the coating wore off & the leather has pretty much deteriorated.
That particular seat is not used any more or less than the rest of the sofaor the chairs & the back to that particular seat is fine.
When I called DFS they said they had an inspector that would have to come round & test the defective part but he was only in our area twice a month on a week day between 9 & 5 so I would have to wait a few months to get him round & also take time off work (for which I didnt get paid).
Unfortunately for us the fact we couldnt get him round sooner meant we were over the guarantee period so we would have had to pay.
it was a waste of time me trying to get anything off them but you may have more luck, just be prepared for them to say you've been using the sofa as a trampoline!!

Sick of Debt - but didn't you go back to DFS re this? You reported the problem within your guarantee period. It wasn't your fault that they didn't get someone out to see the problem sooner. It seems as though it is a ploy that DFS might use to escape their liabilities.

I've got a couple of DFS sofas as well. Looked great to start with, but they are not built for the long run are they? Cost me nearly £2000 in total and if I could afford to replace them - I'd have a massive bonfire in my back garden tonight!!!

Then why on earth did you go to DFS?

To the OP however.... you stand in the same position as any other item that you buy and it breaks during normal use. Contact DFS and say it is faulty. I dont know what DFS are like for after sales service having never bought from them (their poor presales service and item quality has always put me off) but be prepared to be accused of breaking it through miss use.

be prepared to use a solicitor to help you out and be prepared to go all the way to court if you need to.
I speak from experience ,dfs are a nasty company if anything goes wrong. They will try every trick in the book to get out of there obligations.
I rejected ours using consumer credit act .Finance company were as bad as dfs (or are they part of dfs)I stopped paying and told em to pick goods up and was threatened with legal action .Using advice from a solicitor and a couple of well worded letters i respectfully told them I would meet them there and happily let the judge decide,I then threatened to sue them and the credit company it went on for months they eventually offered me another suite up to a 1000 pound more than the one we had bought as long as we withdrew court threat ,eventually got suite picked up and all monies refunded.
Do not accept a repair ,and if they are coming to inspect the goods tell them they must bring id.They refused so I wouldnt let them in .and do not let them take your suite away for "evaluation" by the manufacturer .
get rid if you can and buy one from a decent company.

Mine did the same. I phoned them and they sent someone out to inspect it. The bit of wood that goes across the back had a knot in it (shouldn't have) and it split. They arranged for a replacement settee. The turnaround was quite quick - about a week in all as far as I remember.
