Problem with Pc memory. Advice needed!

Hi, basically i purchased a new pc here.

I then fitted it with 2 * 512 mb kingston ram and it was working pretty well. Since i have installed vista i felt i needed that bit extra so purchased 1gb ram so i could have 1.5gb ram as I only have two ram slots.

This is the one I bought.

Unfortunately when I installed it i got a bsod so have replaced it with my old memory. Before i bought it i ran the crucial memory checker and it said that i can have 1gb per slot max. Is it a problem that one is 512mb and one is 1gb?
Or is this memory faulty???

Thanks in advance!

I think I would try with just the new 1GB in on it's own, making sure it's properly installed. If you still have a problem then I guess it's likely to be a memory problem. (For what it's worth, I run my laptop with unequal amounts in each slot with no problem.)

I would never buy memory over the internet. I have had occasions where I've had 2 or 3 trips back to a dealer, so getting it off Ebay is not IMOO the best thing to do. Although a motherboard SAYS it will take 2gb I would be sceptical, so your approach of "try one" is right.

I agree with Onzey. Put the 1gb in slot one and try it. My guess is that it'll go through the memory check and then start bleeping.

Still, with a "100% life time guarantee" you can't go wrong. Can you? :-)

If it works try adding one of the other sticks, if that fails try the other.

    Good luck.

Ram needs to be paired with the same type/size..

    Hi maniac886

The RAM you bought from ebay is 'high density' RAM.
It might be that this is not compatible with your PC/motherboard.
You need to do some research (contact Lenovo or use Google) to find out whether high density RAM is ok for you.
On the ebay site that you linked to in your post it says:-

Do you accept returns if the memory is incompatible?

Yes, in this case you have 2 options. If you'd like a refund for the item, it will not include shipping and handling fees. If you'd like to exchange the item for a low density ram, we will send you an invoice for the difference (you will not have to pay for shipping again).

If you Google high density ram there are several links to pages that explain what the difference is between high density and low density RAM - and what the problems are.

    Good luck:cool:

    edit: what johnmcn says above:-
Ram needs to be paired with the same type/size..
is not always the case, it depends on your particular motherboard.

If the crucial memory checker is accurate then it did say that my motherboard would support hi-density memory.

'Ram needs to be paired with the same type/size'

I have stuck a 256mb and 512mb and it works fine so I don't think this is the problem. I only bought this because it was a cheaper alternative to Kingston. However I have to say Kingston is much more reliable and I may return this one a spend that little bit extra!

I can't actually find a crucial upgrade page for your 8259 series but if this 8258 series page is the same for your model then by looking at the Q/A's it appears you can mix densities, if crucial have their facts right.
  • type your motherboard name into Google and it should take you the makers
site, and you should be able to find out about your problem, weather you
    can fit 2 512 gb or 2 1gbs
