Berlin

My husband and I have just booked a 4 night trip to Berlin in August with his parents.

We want to do all the usual touristy type things, but need info on evenings out and where to eat during the day (I refuse to pay the hotels 20 Euros a head for breakfast ). Any suggestions?

We're stopping at the Melia hotel, right in the centre of Berlin, so handy for most things really.

Any info gratefully received.

There are loads of bakeries that you can get breakfast. Also, the bars and cafes next to Hacheshe (sp?) markt served cheap breakfasts.

Cafe am neuen see is lovely on a summer afternoon, it's a huge beer garden next to the lake and it serves good pizzas. I also really liked Prater beer garden. We went on a really hot evening and it was crowded but has a good atmosphere and serves sausages.

Oranienburg strasse (I think that is the street) is full of bars and has places to eat. It's a bit too touristy on a weekend but has a very kitsch and tacky outdoor Indian restaurant.
  • Falafel. Probably the best you'll get in Europe and dirt cheap as well. I found a good place near Rosenthaler Platz but I'm sure there's many others - just make sure they're making it to order before you buy.

Not too far away is the legendary black and white photobooth on Kastianenallee. If you're in the area make sure you stop by, the photos are instantly recognisable by anyone who's ever used it (there are a lot).

One museum I would really recommend is the DDR-Museum, very matter of fact and very interesting. I also found the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer on Bernauer Strasse much more interesting than the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.

If you're in Berlin you have to have a Currywurst, sold from street vendors' kiosks everywhere.

On the top floor of the Potsdamer Platz shopping centre is an Asienimbiss, a fast food Asian place that has a bank of chefs with woks, you order what you would like and it is stir fried in front of you. Very nice, healthy and cheap :)

The April edition of Lonely Planet magazine which has just dropped through my letterbox this morning has a city break special and includes Berlin. However you may want to leaf through a copy in Newsagents before deciding to buy it as there is only one page on Berlin but does have some interesting ideas for eating out.
