Driving confidence

I hope that someone here can help please.

I am told that there is available a training course/day/event where drivers can get to grips with large vehicles HGVs, busses, vans etc so that they can get an understanding of how to drive them and gain confidence.

I have a long wheelbase Transit that I need my daughter to drive but there is a confidence issue she needs to overcome.

Does anyone know of any locations where such events are held? I've tried to google variations of searchs but have had no luck so far.

Many thanks for any help.

  • Not sure your "need" for her to drive issue is going to instil any confidence in her. If she doesn't feel comfortable then she'll need time.

As one would expect, googling the relevant words bring up heaps of data and companies offering van driver training.
  • There are driving 'experience' companies that have 'drive an hgv/bus/rally car/tank etc' events ..... but i have never seen them do a van?
Plus driving something round an airfield is much different to driving it on the rd.

Most of the places which offer HGV/PSV/Forklift training often have additional services such as trailer courses, minibus courses etc. There's a place near one of our disaster offices which trains St Johns Ambulance people in a battered old ambulance and they also offer 15/17 seat minibus training.

I've driven LWB Transits fairly often and they aren't difficult to drive. Why can't you just take her out for a 'test drive'?
  • Like said above, just take her out on the road with you as a passanger, go out when its quiet or too a quiet car park and ler her practice reversing into spaces etc, after a few days practise she should get the feel of it, i actually find and prefer driving vans due to the better visability and larger mirrors etc.

Is she even confident driving a car? If not particularly, I wouldnt be letting her anywhere near a larger vehicle. Having said that, I went from driving a Corsa to a Transit and there wasnt much difference I dont think, except the Transit had a fair amount more poke than my Corsa!! The only issue is reversing, but if that needs to be done just be a banksman for it if you arent driving.

Also, not sure on the rules about LWB Transits - do they fall in another licence category that depending on when your daughter got her licence she might not have the Cat Code to actually legally drive it anyway?

LWB and XLWB are fine, just aslong as the overall weight is not more that 3.5 ton.
