Selling a car privately

I have to sell my much loved Merc SLK because I need to swap to something cheaper to run. Bought a little Citroen this morning so the SLK has to go.

I know I should have done my homework first but my insurers have changed their rules since I last bought a car.

Previously I could have two cars on my policy for up to 28 days for a small extra fee. I think I paid about £30 for this two years ago. Now they're telling me they won't do this.

I have advertised my old car for sale but until I get a buyer, I've got two cars. I'll put off taking delivery of the new one for as long as possible but once I get it, obviously I'll need to insure it.

I can take my Merc off the road and not have insurance on it as we have a driveway. I know I'd risk it being stolen or bursting into flames but, touch wood, we are in a safe-ish area. However, how would I stand then for people coming to view it and test drive it, does anyone know?

I'm rather wishing I'd gone for part-exchange but the prices were pitiful.

Any clever ideas please?

I've looked into those short-term insurances. THey want £160 for the month!!!!

  • If you are the only nominated driver on both then logic dictates that you cannot possibly be driving them both at the same time so the only dual risk they have is theft. However, this may be what they are refusing to do.

My guess is that you need to insure the car for 1000 miles a year with comprehensive and with an insurer who will allow you to cancel the insurance with minimal or no cost. You'll have to pay out up front but your net cost will be so much lower. All of this however comes into the equation when calculating the price you need to let it go.

    Thank you.
    That's a good idea!

As far as I know it is now law that you have to have insurance on a car even if it is kept in your drive unless it is Sorned.

I would check this if I was you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Discussed that with my insurers today. It is going to become law but it isn't law yet!
