It's very high too. Surely increasing the height that much needs some kind of planning?

If the old leaning fence on your side is definately yours, I'd be tempted to remove it. Deprived of support, your neighbours ugly fence will more than likely blow down the next time there is a decent wind, which will hopefully force your neighbour to either remove it or at least rebuild it properly.
  • The neighbour is in his eighties and I would say that the builder has taken him for a ride. The sad thing is it leaves us feeling like bullies because we don't like the way it looks and he ( the neighbour) thinks it looks ok from his side. I don't want to go in all guns blazing but it cannot stay as it is. it really is monstrous. Equally I am not in a position to fund a huge legal battle and i suspect he isnt either. The council suggested it was a civil matter and were not prepared to assist at all, so I don't know where to go from here really. if the fence blows down in high winds then it could likely crash through the sun room at the back, then who is liable - its such a mess

Do you have an employee assistance programme at your work that may give some legal advice or legal cover with your home insurance? Maybe they could suggest something positive...?

Has he seen it from your side?
  • yes he has, but he is happy with it, he stated it was a good solid fence!
  • What is it that bothers you the most about it and what if anything can be done about it?

    you mentioned that it is:

    A. Ugly: so if you covered up the ugliness with something else, say by extending you fence, would this help?
    B. Orange: would he object to you painting it one your side to a more acceptable colour?
    C. Too high: I don't see how you can get round this without getting him to take it down, but maybe if the ulgy, orangeness was obscured perhaps the height wouldn't be such a problem?

Perhaps you should just remove your fence and see if his falls down.

I'd be very tempted to do this.

It looks like standard fence panels to me. The colour will weather quite quickly. Clearly the main issue is the attachment to the existing fence and the increased height.
Wait for him to pass away then discreetly dismantle it...
  • The other issue (I'm the other half) is his new fence is bolted to the old one, I assume I would have to unscrew this, I want to go out with a bloody hammer and smash the damn thing to pieces but I'm being good right now.
I think I should say thank you first :D
