Conservatory quote

Having some work done on house - was looking at a single storey extension at rear of property but came out too expensive (£36k + without fitting kitchen etc). Back to drawing board and decided on knocking small galley kitchen into dining room and putting conservatory on back (2.6 x 4 m).

Builder will do dwarf wall etc so only been looking for conservatory to be fitted onto the base. Had three quotes: £4k (from company wasn't too sure about); £7,300 (bennbrooks windows); and £9,450 from a local tradesman in NE London.

We were thinking of using the middle guy but still not sure if it's a good price or not. He supplies Tricept frame, ultraframe roof... local tradesman was Synerjy (Synseal) frame & roof. Everything else was bogstandard (35mm polycarb roof, pilkington K glass on windows, Edwardian style).

Anyone know if £7.3k is par for course on conservatories (realise you get what you pay for but on top of building work having done and fact that OH is expecting our first child I'm keen to not get ripped off!)?

Cheers.

I have an existing Edwardian conservatory (hardwood) and I want it removed and replaced with UPVC structure as it has started to rot and leake quite badly. Therefore I have the existing dwarf wall and just want new UPVC structure put up. I have been qouted c.£8500 for this but it includes self cleaning glass roof, with a polycarbonate roof it goes down to c.£6900. Ceiling light & fan, concrete floor (we are having it raised) and a raditaor installed come in at £500 each. This is from a company we have used for the rest of our double glazing who did a good job. Am getting other quoutes too (we are in Hertfordshire)
  • Thanks for that - definitely helps to know that it's within the right ballpark. Can I ask whether your square meterage is close to ours (~10 m2)?
  • we had a kitchen extension built 2010 cost £9700 plus vat and fitted the kitchen ourselves. size 11ftx8, with polyroof and velux domed window in the roof
 Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.
Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life
that count....it's the life in your years :D

Whatever you do don't have polycarb, you will regret it for ever.

yes the area looks pretty much similar to ours. I am getting another price today so I will let you know what they come out at. I really don't want a polycarbonate roof, but the glass roof pushes the price up.

I would say don't get a glass roof. Yes it's quieter when raining but in the summer you can't sit in the conservatory unless you wear sunglasses

Is polycarb that bad? Was getting the version with 'silver' inserts (tecsun) but it's mainly an affordability thing...

Have had one more quote in meantime from company called SEH BAC... was good (£7,250 for conserv plus a window and door in main house). Anyone heard of the company before - can't find any reviews online but they've supposedly been around a while (40 years!)?
  • polycarb more noisy when raining, but not as hot in summer. With a glass roof, it will be boiling hotand too bright, so you might end up spending more money to put roof blinds

Not strictly true these days. There are a range of glass types now that cut out excessive heat and glare.Any reputable conservatory supplier should check the orientation of your conservatory in relation to the sun.Glass can have light transmission percentages from the 70's down to the 20's and can be several different shades.Even self cleaning nowadays.Of course, the price varies but the days of boiling in a glass roof conservatory are over if you pay for the good stuff.

The 7,300 sounds about right thats a similar price i charge for something that size. I would upgrade if possible to pilk self clean its amazing i try and talk all my customers into it. Poly carb is just to noisey when it rains glass is the way forward.

As for someone saying about wearing sunglasses pilks come with a few different shade of glass options i prefer blue tint keeps the rays out and loads of heat as there glass will come argon filled thus redusing the heat by 50%.
