I'm a tad late to this thread, but will chip in...

I got into the games industry in 1997 by writing a little game, just a scrolling shooter - nothing special, and sending it to 3 agencies. I'm a programmer. Ended up with 9 interviews in a mad 12-day period all over the country, and had 3 offers to choose from. I couldn't believe the response!

My computing degree (2:2) was useless for this type of work, and I only had 1 interview prior to me writing the game as most people wanted demos. The new specialist 'games' degrees are more appealing to employers I guess, but the flipside is there are now loads of graduates with these degrees.

It was all down to the demo so I'd get one done and sent off - it's a fun industry, pays well, incredibly hard work sometimes but I'm still doing it 14 years later and still look forward to work each day ;)

I am a ex worker for Playstation and from cheshire Originally

i was one of the game tester's in beta for Motorstorm PS3 First came out a few years ago for the company who are based in Runcorn in cheshire. (Evalution studios)

The Games indsutry is Huge i would suggest Playstations own website for recruitment as they also host in house companies who are hiring (Such as for example EA or any of the companies)

I know a few months ago that PS3 were hiring but not too sure heard they also were some job losses on the cards round my way in liverpool an cheshire back in march, sincle game maker blizzard said good-bye to the merseyside shores its quite competition now

anyway the link to that side is here http://www.playstationjobs.co.uk/

its how i got my job back then and now i am a self employed in it and programmer and web designer for clients in my own business now so it has lead to better things.

My own advice would be to offer your services in another part games industry such as marketing or games promotion and when in a role apply as a internalship grad to game design. I know some in house companies have these scheams in place.but very rare the ecomary is killing the industry like everything else.

    Hope that helps

    cheers
