Help - do you know of any open days/openings in computer games industry?

Have a degree in computer science from Southampton and would love to work within the computer games industry. My degree was a 2:2 and I wonder whether this bars me from getting into this? (most companies want 2:1 or above). Does anyone know of any open days in this sector in the north west? Any advice you can offer would be great. Have written to Evolution Studios, Amiqus and a couple of others in Cheshire/Manchester. I am rooting around, not lazy but could do with some fresh suggestions. Sorry...lots of other people deserve more help than me.

I must admit that I know nothing about computer games, however, I do know that Birmingham seems to be the centre of the universe when it comes to the computer gaming industry with many such companies located here.

I think that you need to apply for anything and everything in this current climate so you may not get your ideal job straight away.

Search the 'High Street' stage in 'World 4: City Centre' for the brown building with a blue sign 'job centre' outside. There will be a queue of 'Jobseekers' outside. Use the SWORD OF DESTINY you picked up from the 'Poundsavers' stage in 'World 3: Council Estate'. Use the SWORD OF DESTINY to kill all the 'Jobseekers'. Go inside the 'Jobcentre' and press A,B,A,B,C,C,A,B,Up by the third job rack. A 'Job Adviser' will give you the SPEAR OF ETERNIA. Now go back to 'World 1: Ancient Ruins'. Make your way across the map until you reach the river where you first fought the 'Trolls' The 'Trolls' have now respawned, so use the SPEAR OF ETERNIA on them. They will leave some MAGIC CRYSTALS behind when they die. Now go into the cave where you fought the 'Wizard' boss and use the CRYSTALS on the back wall. A secret door will open with a warp to the unreachable 4th floor of the 'Technology Park' building in 'World 4: City Centre'. Here you can fight the final 3 bosses, the 'Interview Panel'. Use the SPEAR OF ETERNIA on the HR Rep (Guy in the white shirt, or blue in the PSP version) and the SWORD OF DESTINY on the woman taking notes (Note her fireballs give 50 hit points each, so can kill you instantly).

Once she's dead, take on the main guy in the suit using the CURICULLUM VITAE and QUALIFICATIONS you got in 'World 2: University'. He takes about thirty hits but his plasma balls are very easy to avoid. Once you get the job, you see the endscreen. Good luck!!!

You're going to have to be willing to do some [free] work experience or internships to make up for the lower classification.

Have you considered further study? The University of Abertay [just outside Dundee] is one of the best universities for the subject. That of course means it's highly competitive. I'm trying to get into book publishing, and I've been told networking is essential. Have you joined Linked-In?

I don't think gaming industry jobs pop up in the JobCentre too often.

https://www.mcvuk.com is the website of one of the games industry's trade mags, has a recruitment section on the website. Agree on the fact it's not easy to get into, however if you're motivated enough it is possible - i know a couple of my mates did the course up at Abertay & loved it, they tend to work with THE name in gaming (Rockstar Games - the studio behind GTA), but check out the MCV website.

This guy knows what he's talking about.

You could try writing mods for popular games; I know of a few people who've got jobs in the industry after doing that.

Are you writing games? With or without experience, you'll need a portfolio, I'd have thought.

I thought Coventry was the centre of the games design world, but what would I know, I'm only a mother ...

Take a look at this and this, see if they help. Nothing to do with my offspring, btw.
