Insurance 5K+ min

I've been looking at getting a car recently and while I wasn't expecting cheap insurance, £5k + is unbelievable.

I'm 18 and have held my license for 4 months.

At first I looked for '08 models and such and found the insurance on a 1.2 Corsa around £6000 so that was instantly a miss. I tried a number of different cars and nothing would get the price to drop below £5000, not even a 1 litre Peugeot 106 from 1998.

Things like that don't seem to make sense so my guess was I'd put some details in wrong or MoneySupermarket was having an off day :P I tried calling a couple of companies and same, most couldn't insure me.

I can't seem to figure out why that is, the car would be driven under 6000 miles a year, I live in a good area, etc. The only factor I can think of that doesn't count in my favour is being self-employed yet I'd be happy to pay the full amount upfront so I can't see that being the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Probably to do with your postcode more than anything, although 18 year old males in low risk areas, with low group cars are paying c£3k. A good area in your eyes, may mean that insurers have had a lot of claims from there.

Have a look at the post on young drivers - that will give you some tips e.g. classic car, low mileage, older person on policy etc. etc.

I can see a bigger one... Your 18 with a license held for 4 months. Your instantly a HUGE risk to all insurers.

Try adding some older more experienced drivers onto the policy as named drivers (please do not front a policy!)

Maybe do a pass plus or advanced driving course as that could help bring things down, short of that... your just going to have to pay it :(!

Possibly go for a "classic car". Can be much cheaper on something a bit boring.

Yes, it used to be 17 year olds were the poor risk.
Now the age is creeping up.
Soon it'll be anyone under 25, then 35......
It'll probably catch up with me before I become a poor risk again as a pensioner.
