Boiler installation

Hi,
Apologies if answered already somewhere. We live in a semidetached 3 bedded house. There is an extension of our living room done many years ago, we just bought this property. The extension does not have a radiator. We have only 5 radiators for our house in total, which is less to begin with. The house was always cold and hence we had to keep our fireplace gas fire on always and hence we got a huge bill from gas people. Now, with summer approaching it could be better. But, still our house is cold.
I want to change to combination boiler...
1. preferably valliant ecotec 28 which need to be fit upstairs cupboard.
2. gas pipeline to be changed to 22mm one from 15mm which may be around 10 meters.
3. Flue for possible 1 meters.
4. fit radiator downstairs, the feeder has to come from bedroom upstairs
5. radiator in the kitchen
6. towel rail in bathroom to be changed.
I have been quoted by BG 4600 pounds. i think this is quite high. I wonder how much should be an ideal cost please.
BG said that my Aquarius shower with electric pull cord will not work with combination boiler. Hence, I need to change it. One of the local plumber says it should be fine. I am not sure of this. Can anyone comment on this please.
Obiviously, I am getting more quotes from the local plumbers as well.
Thank you very much

An electric shower does not work with a combination or any other boiler, it gets its water directly from the mains supply.
Unless you mean a power shower i.e One with a pump.
BTW Is there anything wrong with your current boiler?
Don't believe all the hype regarding savings with new boilers, you'll save more improving your homes insulation.
O yes and get another quote BG tend to be a little on the expensive side. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
If you have undersized radiators and / or piping your house will be cold even if you have an industrial boiler fitted. Get a local independant in and discuss what needs doing to your system0

Thank you molerat and Penrhyn. I am changing the boiler because of two issues, we both go to work more or less the same time with a toddler, last adult to shower has to take cold bath as the storing tank is small. Though the existing boiler is (baxi) working well; the storage tank is 15 yrs old. and for installing 2 radiators it might be expensive on it's own (1700 pounds quoted by BG) I thought it is ridiculous.
How would I know how many radiators my house need? And my shower is aquastream, not sure it is power one or not. How to know that please.
As of now, intheheat Uk gave cheapest price of 2900 pounds, but he did not survey the house. Says all would be fine. Not sure how good and to trust or not.
Please help me.0 -

Let us know what they say..."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
BG ripped off my in laws to the tune of almost £7000 for new stuff they really didn't need. And then put them on a really high central heating cover plan grrrrrr
Ring up a few local tradesmen, and get a few quotes, they will be happy to spend the time finding out what you NEED not what they can sell you. A tip from my B-i-L (who is a tradesman) look in the local paid newspaper for ads - it is not cheap to advertise, so anyone who has a regular ad must have a steady flow of business, and is likely to be reliable if local, as bad repuations spread quickly. Of course, this is not always the case, and it is best to have references and VISIT recent properties where they have worked.
When I had my CH put in a few years ago, I did this, and when he had finished, he asked if a couple of other people could look at what he had done. I was happy to do this as his work was excellent. Sadly he now has emigrated to South Africa !Getting fit for 2013 - Starting weight 10.1.13 88.1kg

This riles me I'm afraid. If you get a quote and have a cooling off period and you accept it with all the stuff you don't really need (and it's a quote not an estimate), then you have not been ripped off. Bg may have gone pricey again at the moment but they certainly aren't hard sell.0
