Dear All
what a nice sunny spring day depending on where you are
Where is the most cost effective shop to buy plants for my hanging basket? Wilkinson, lidly garden centre?
What are the best plants to grow to make a really lovely basket this year
thanks

I personally prefer to get plants from a local nursery - better quality and this time of year is when they are selling the small plug plants for you to grow on yourself. I've just bought 20 mixed colour geraniums for £3.50 which I'm quite pleased with. Also keep an eye on the grabbit board, there's sometimes thompson and morgan offers on there, and if you can get the free postage it's well worth it.
Plus in proper nurseries/garden centres there's more choice and you can buy one or two of each, whereas Wilkos etc tend to have packs of 6 or 12 and you have to take what's in there.
My personal preference for a hanging basket is bizzy lizzies, trailing fuschia, trailing or upright geraniums and a few basket fillers such as verbena, diascia or bacopa.

My mum prefers petunias, million bells, lobelia, that sort of thing.
    Personal preference really.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I get some from a local nursery, surfinias in particular, and then take cuttings as they root very easily. I like this plant in my baskets with things like Nemesia, trailing greenery (can't remember the name, has a small leaf) trailing lobelia, small flowered fuschias, million bells.

I no longer use Geraniums (pelargoniums really) as they take over. I put a saucer or similar at the base of the basket on top of the liner but today I saw a picture of a plastic mineral bottle cut in half with the top at the top and the compost around. This was to make watering easier.

Also, I have gone off using spagnum moss as I never seem to get it right. I use M&S plastic bags sometimes as they are dark green and very soon not noticeable as the plants grow. The coir stuff looks good but needs a liner over it to prevent water running out I find.
