USB device not recognised

I just plugged in the trusty old HP printer to the laptop after a spell of storage only to find that it wouldn't drive it off the USB ports on the machine, only once after a restart off a hub.
So now all is disconnected but I am continually (like every 15 secs) getting messages up to say that the USB device is not recognised....hit troubleshooting tab and there is nothing there in the box that appears....just empty!
How can I stop this annoying thing?

Uninstall and reinstall the driver? Try a different USB lead? Try a different USB port?:idea:0

thanks for the replies. I discovered that the USB lead to the hub was in the wrong port, put it in the correct one and it stopped. It seems to me that the computer 'learns' which each of the four ports drives.0

Which model of HP?.
its an HPDJ 3745
I also notice that the computer seems to have 'lazy days' on its USBs with the other printer HP380 in the office, some days it will drive it no problem, other days it will stop after 15 mins and will require a restart to purge any docs.....now the plug is defo in the right hole in this instance0
