Could you ask your employer if there is anything else you can do whilst waiting for orders? I always hated just sitting there too, but there's often something which needs doing at the same time.

Don't go to ask for redundancy though: unless you've been there a long time an extra couple of week's pay will be worth more than a more generous redundancy package.

I was in that boat, and its best just to get on with looking for a new job whilst you wait on the news.
