talk talk and sky help please

A friend had someone from talk talk knock on her door and persuaded her to go with talk talk, telling her that when she got a pc she could phone up and ask for the free broadband and there'd be no problems in sending it and getting it for free.
A few weeks later she got a pc and called to arrange the broadband - only to be told that the door to door salesperson should not have told her that and it would be £xx for the modem and £xx monthly bb charge.
Friend then got called by sky and agreed to subscribe to 30 extra channels for £15 a month and get unlimited free calls for an extra £5. SHe thought that was all set up as she'd got the channels within a day.
However when her bill came it wasn't right.
SKy say she's not got the free calls deal as she is still with talk talk and needs to go back to bt first and that she can't cancel the 30 channel deal she's agreed to. Is this right?
She's not happy with either company now as they've both lied to her and she wants to change and get a good deal for calls and broadband. Her initial satelite was just a one off charge so if she can get out of the sky channels, she would like to.
WHere should she start in dealing with this?

Your friend appears to have a contract with Talk Talk (albeit that their cold caller salesman told her porkies to get her to sign up) and needs to get out of that contract before a move back to BT for line rental and CPS via Sky will be possible.

If the Sky installation was new, that'll be a 12 month contract too (but a separate issue to the telephony).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Is your friend actually you? ;) Is she one of those people that get stopped in the street and agrees to give money to sponsor an elephant or something too :D

My advise is, dont buy anything from a door to door salesman! Do research yourself and find the right companies for you, dont let them come and find you!!

Martin offers advise regarding Sky on his main pages. She can either ring them and say that she doesnt use x amount of her channels and get the bill cut, or could just cancel it and say she was duped into taking out an additional service with false promises. She could also complain to the Head/Director of each company and say that she was lied to in order to take out the additional services. If you make a loud enough noise, eventually someone will hear you!!!

She can also threaten to take things further, going to the citizens advise bureau to see what advise they offer. People being lied to at their own doors must be a daily occurence with simple solutions. Next steps, contact watchdog and the likes! If the compnies are found to do it often enough, they may get in touch and get things sorted that way.

The worst thing to do would be to stew over it and get annoyed with these companies! Take action! Make sure she uses the saynoto0870 web site first though, as ringing these companies costs a fortune and they keep you hanging on the phone for ages!!

LOL no it's not me. And I think she probably would LOL. She just gets carried away and then regrets it afterwards - she has lots of things that she's bought from shopping channels - last year paid £8 per item p&p over 15 times :( but that's another story.

Anyhow, so she needs to cancel talk talk first - she mentioned something about a 3 month contract and thats now over, so in theory she can cancel and switch back to bt in order to make the most of the sky contract she's signed up for, if they won't let her out of that.

The Sky Talk phone package (unlimited UK 01/02 calls of up to 60 minutes each for a flat rate of £5) is quite a good deal for someone making more than 125 weekday daytime calls each month every month. Make less than that number of calls and Primus Saver Option 2 (free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls of up to 90 minutes for no monthly fee) and use of 18185 (weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls of unlimited duration for 4p each) is better.

There's still the question of her getting away from Talk Talk and transferring her line rental back to BT though. I'd be surprised if her contract was as short as 3 months.

Poor lass, she sounds like a cold callers dream! She shouldnt be allowed a phone, think of all the rubbish she could buy with people ringing her too!

I'd enquire what length of contract she entered in to, and how long is left on that contract. Also find out if there is anything she can do to minimise the monthly repayments. i.e get a cheaper option with them for less money, like downgrading your mobile phone tariff.
