British Gas stopped ccharging me for gas

Hi, all

I'm a new forum user with a real problem. I've lived in my house for 30 years- it used to be two flats, and still has two gas meters one for upstairs, one for downstairs . One was on direct debit, one I pay when the bill arrived . I realised recently that I hadn't had a Direct debit bill for a while, when I phoned about it they said i was no longer with them . I have never changed supplier so no idea why that should be. To be honest, as it was on D.D. I never really thought much about this bill, so I've no idea when they last sent one. I know i capped both bills to end in march 2011 (back in 2009 maybe? Whenever Martin recommended it!) but can't find any of the old information (partner insisted i threw everything over two years old away last year) .Same thing happened a few years ago and it turned out that there was a mix up with the meter serial number which was logged as being at a house down the road, but British gas said it was OK and that I HAD been paying the correct amount. That time I realised quickly as a queried a "Sorry you're leaving us" letter, this time I didn't receive one of those so I can't tell how long it is since they've billed me. Does anyone know where I would stand on payment for gas I've used in the intervening period , which COULD,I suppose, be over a year? Eeeeek !

thanks for any help you can give me , people :o)

If BG are at fault and not sent you a bill, then the Billing Code states they will only backdate payment for 12 months.

However it has to be established that they were at fault; which from your post appears likely.

I think you should get BG to check Xoserve - the industry database. This will tell you who your supplier is. You can then call the new supplier and ask for an Erroneous Transfer back to BG if they can prove they took over your supply incorrectly. From what you say it may be your neighbour that was meant to move and because of a mix up with the serial no and probably Meter point reference number they took over your property instead.

If this happens BG will bill you as if you never left them but it takes around 6 weeks for the industry to send the supply back. They would also allow you to pay back the bill over the time they will bill you for.

Of course if you decide you like the new supplier and want to stay with them you can ask why they have not billed you- prob because the bills are going to the neighbour. In this instance you could use the 12 month back billing rule.
