Boiler Cover - Beware - Read the small print

I took out boiler cover from Powergen my electricity and gas supplier last year. A couple of months ago I received a letter from Domestic & General who are Powergen's insurer for this product. They informed me that I was entitled to an annual service on my boiler free of charge.

Fantastic. i called them and they gave me a reference number and a number to call of a local engineer to make an appointment. I called the number but they informed me that they only work between the hours of 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

Now I'm a hardworking chap like the rest of us, I leave the house at 7am and return at 6pm at the earliest. There lies the problem. I called Domestic & General again to ask for the number of a supplier who could visit me either early evening or at the weekend. I was then informed that ALL of their engineers work 9-5 and that in the small print on the policy it says this.

To cut a long story short I have cancelled my policy as I am not prepared to take time off work for something that I pay for - they should have some level of flexibility to work with their customers. I'm sure I am not in the same boat here with people who work and would find it difficult to accomodate this level of poor service.

So my message to you if you are thinking about taking out a policy, read the small print first. It would be good to hear from you if you have had a similar experience and also if you know of a provider that can offer servicing outside of office hours.

It's not just them, most businesses appear to be geared around the assumption that nobody else works and have nothing better to do than sit at home waiting for their people to arrive at some time between 8am and 6pm.
