Good wireless modem?

Hi,
My dad's wireless network is pretty bad and so I want to buy him a new modem (he currently has the one given by Sky when he signed up for broadband). Can anyone please recommend a decent one (not too expensive)?
Thanks a lot.

1, 4 and 5 are routers only - primarily intended for cable connections. If you buy any of these you will need a separate modem - not what you want.
2 and 3 are combined ADSL modem/routers.
These are all low-end equipment. If you want to improve on Sky's equipment, you might want to go up-market a little. Do you have a budget in mind?
There are many reasons why your father's network might be performing badly. A better modem/router will not necessarily improve matters.0 -
Rather than just buy a new wireless access point (or complete router), I'd first try to find out why the network is so bad.
The first step would be to run a program like InSSIDer to see which channels your neighbours are using for their networks, and make sure that you are not using the same one as everyone else. You could also try re-locating your router to see if that improves the signal strength.
Also, you could buy a wirless access point (or a router which has one built-in) and connect it to a cable running to your Sky router. You can then use both wireless access points to increase the range of your network.0 -
If you want to change the modem supplied by Sky you could have a problem, the password for access to logon names and password is not available unless you download a program to work it out. If you do succeed in getting that info and put into the new modem, then Sky will not support it and may cut you off, check TandCs.
If you go for a wireless access point, then it would be better to switch off the wireless on the original modem to avoid annoying neighbours, there is only so much spectrum available.
Your best course as someone stated earlier, to see if you can find your current problem. Thick walls, placing of modem, other stations on the same channel.0 -
aerostar's spot-on about sky routers and extracting the username/password. Yes, it's possible on most (if not all) the models sky provide, and in all fairness most of them have been decent models of router (apart from the sagem horrors) albeit semi-crippled with bespoke firmware.
If sky gave you a netgear or D-link, you should be okay, but again, as stated above, you need to work through WHY it's not performing well as it is......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I would say check there is nothing wrong with the router. Its either the router is faulty or it is somewhere where the signal is blocked or there is too much interference. If you get a new router, it may not fix the problem, and if it is faulty, why buy a new one. First try to relocate it, then speak to sky about a replacement.0
