in Credit cards
Moneysavers,
I had a credit card which i've just recently paid off. I called them today because even though it was paid off the took a direct debit for £25. I had set the direct debit up to take the minimum payment and had not been checking my statements very regularly because I knew the balance on there and I was not spending on the card.
However, during the course of speaking to them I discovered that I had been paying late payments since August. When I enquired as to why, they said that the august payment was declined by my bank due to insufficient funds. I cant remember back then, but it is entirely possible. However, as I have the direct debit set up to take the minimum payment shouldn't it have taken everything the next month? They are claiming that the direct debit does guarantee does not allow them to take past payments so therefore they collected the correct minimum payment, I looked at the direct debit guarantee and it does not say anything of the sort! Something sounds a bit fishy to me. Has anyone every come across this and if anyone can offer advice please do!

the DD will only be taken for THAT months min.payment,if a payment is "bounced"then its upto you to make a seperate payment to correct your account, surely you realised that the payment hadnt been made?
they are right when they say that the DD agreement wont allow them to do what you imagine they should have done, and any late payment charges would have appeared on your statements0 -

Not so sure about this. It could well be argued that the "minimum payment" is the minimum amount to maintain the account in order and should therefore incorporate anything overdue from the previous month. I don't see how this would violate the DD agreement. I think it's more to do with MBNA's rigid DD collection system which, for example, will still collect the "minimum" even if the account has been cleared by the time the DD is called.
I recall a decade or so ago, when as a financially fekless youth I would occasionally miss payments, my credit card bills would include the previous missed payment in the minimum figure I should pay now.0
