Change registrant: will it affect domain name account at 1and1

Oh god I'm confused.
Right: "Bob" bought a domain name for someone ("Jo") at 1and1 (I know, I know, they're awful) and hosting elsewhere (Nexcess I think) and sorted them out a website. Great.

It's coming up for domain name renewal in May. Bob doesn't do website design any more, so I was asked to tart up Jo's site. Easy enough. I pointed out to them that they are not the legal owners of the domain name - Bob is. (Wish I hadn't, now!)

So Jo asked me to sort out making them the registrants, the legal owners, not Bob. Bob agrees.

Nominet, the .co.uk authority, have an easy transfer process that costs £10 and will make Jo the registrant, not Bob.

But... this still means that Bob is paying for the domain renewals on his 1and1 account, right? First of all, I want to know this: if Jo throws Bob some money to cover the renewal (it's all set up on his account, and they are on good terms) will the change of registrant affect the domain name on 1and1? I did google this but got bogged down in Tags and detags and stuff.

Secondly - if it does affect it, I suppose then Jo must make their own 1and1 account and they follow this process here: http://faq.1and1.co.uk/domains/domain_xfers/internal_xfers/5.html which looks like an utter pain. Has anyone ever done this? Was it as painful as it looks?

I suppose I am looking for the easiest solution and I am HOPING someone will say that the transfer of registrant via nominet won't affect the situation of who pays at 1and1... but I'm worried that it might, and the site will go down, and 1and1 are totally unhelpful and I can never find their blasted support-ticket thing.

EDIT: is the other option, to ignore Nominet, and get Jo to make a 1and1 account then follow th 1and1 internal transfer process - I re-read the instructions and it seems that it will make Jo the new registrant automatically, am I reading that right?

Yes. Then transfer it to someone else so you don't have to deal with 1 & 1.

  • It's mad, I started off by thinking it'd be a simple thing via Nominet but I hadn't thought it through at all... transferring within 1and1 is increasingly the obvious answer - just typing out the question here helped me think it through better. Doh.

Jo is not techie and I think once I've got her to make an account with 1and1 she's not going to want to make one elsewhere and move the domain name.

Anyway 1and1 (in spite of terrible customer service) do have cheap domain names, I tend to buy my own there and point to webhosts elsewhere.

    Thanks Steve1980.

I changed a domain ownership a while back - I had to send documentation to nominet to show the change, and it was reasonably straightforward.
I stayed with the same ISP though.
