Those darn banks......

Hi all,
I wondered if anyone can advise - my husband went to see a mortgage adviser at a well known bank. As part of the interview, they did a credit score check, on me as well as him.
They then showed him the balance on MY credit card . Suffice it to say, he didn't know how much I owed & now does...
I've complained & they say they were within their rights as they had asked him if they could do the credit check.
Is this true??
Thanks in advance

They were in the right as they had asked to do a credit check ? I would escalate this upwards in the bank, you did not give any permission for your individual credit card account to be checked. Just because you are married to him does not give them carte blanche to ignore the data protection act.0

Is the mortgage in his name exclusively or joint names?0
-
-
Well, you guys are 'financially linked', applying for a joint mortgage, so of course it is relevant.0
-
Even if it will be a joint mortgage, it seems well out of order for them to be showing him your private information! From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0
-
It could well be out of order and you are of course free to pursue that. Though I'd concentrate on making it up to your husbandOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

Doing a credit check for a mortgage is NOT the same as showing him the balance of your accounts. They have breached the data protection act and you should make a formal complaint.Wedding 5th September 20150

Hi all - thanks so much for your help and advice. Am working on making it up to my husband!!
I made a formal complaint, which the complaints department responded to today, with a telephone offer of £250 compensation. I blagged it a bit on the phone, muttered about independent advice and said the offer was inadequate.
Truth is I have no idea what I should ask for. As a card carrying (!) bank hater, obviously I want as much as possible...Does anyone either have an idea, or know where I can find out what would be considered reasonable??
Thanks again, Jo0 -
Personally I would have thought that £250 was reasonable, I have no idea what others might think. I would spend most of it on reducing the balance and get a nice bottle of something for the husband to mollify him a little maybe ?0

I think £250 was a reasonable amount TBH.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
