Hi i hope somebody can help/offer advice (as its driving me mad!)
i have an acer laptop with wireless card, the laptop is picking up the signal from the wireless router because when i log in, it connects and says internet connected and tells me how man mbps it is currently receiving.....
but when i go top open a webpage like google etc, it just hangs and then doesnt open and says "server error" (for firefox)
for internet explorer i get the "internet explorer cant display this page.....diagnose connection problems" page
im using windows vista
windows firewall has been turned off.....
i just cant think what else it can be, or what else i can try?
does anybody have any clues or idea's for what i should try next please?
thanks....

It is possible that you have a connection to the router, however you may have a APIPA. To check this, click start, click run, type cmd, press ok, type ipconfig /all, find your wireless network adaptor IP address. If the address starts 169.254, this would indicate that you are not obtaining an IP address from the router, and this would be the problem.
If this is the case, you could try typing in the same command prompt window ipconfig /renew.
If you have an IP address starting 192.168, the issue could be with internet security software, have you got any installed? If so, you could temporarily remove it using add/remove programs to see if this fixes it.0 -
At the risk of sounding like technical support, have you uplugged your wireless connection and plugged it back in again?
Go to start->run and type in cmd and hit enter. At the command prompt type in ipconfig. If you get a number that is 192.xxx.xxx.xx or similar then you should be connecting to the internet. If you get an ip address that starts 10.xx.xxxx.xxx then you are only connected to a local network.
HTHSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -

i dont think i have any internet security installed, i did check the add remove programs but nothing is standing out as being internet security. i bought this laptop for my parents so i hardly use it, but i dont remember loading anythign extra ontop, just what it came with i think....
is thre anything else i can try?0 -

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Silly question as I expect you've done this, but looking for simple possibilities :
If you obtained the laptop from your parents, is it still trying to connect to your parents' ISP with their password and log-on - or have you changed that to your own?0 -
Does it work wired, i.e Using an Ethernet connection? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

^^^^^ that happens in the router, not in the pc. The only thing you should have to change is the wifi connection details. Penrhyn's spot-on, try it with ethernet cable and go from there......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
