Looking at the Argos Built in single fan oven/Gas hob to replace old on which is a 13amp plug on the oven. However Argos own site say it must be hard wired, is this a new rule? Homebase have what looks like the same oven and quotes .79kw? surely this is wrong, less than 1KW?.Argos dont give model no or KwH.

I think, and I might be wrong that plugs are only rated up to 13 amps. You need a 20 amp rated back plate. It should also be on its own circut as it will be drawing mroe than the ring main fuse can handle.0

The old one was only ever plugged in to the normal ring main, yup 13amp.0

Many (if not most) single ovens ARE <3kW and ARE fitted with a standard BS1363 13A plug for plugging into a normal 13A socket.
Double ovens, however, are nearly always >3kW and need a dedicated supply. Hobs similarily and free-standing electric cookers (over&hob combined).0 -
The correct and ONLY answer is to check the rating sticker on the back of the oven. Only then will you know for sure.0

And read what the manual says about how it should be connected up. The manual should always have the definitive instructions. Most single ovens I looked at require hard-wiring. Some are fitted with standard 13A plugs but many are not because they require a DP switch with a 15A fuse.0 -
But i cant get the manual till ive bought it, then its to late. No 30 day refund with it!0

If it is shipping as standard with a 13A plug fitted, then it's pretty much a guarantee that it can be safely plugged in to a 13A socket outlet.
Argos (or any other retailer) wouldn't be selling it otherwise in view of the claims that could be forthcoming if it wasn't safe to plug in to a standard 13A socket outlet.

If the electrical info plate states it pulls 3KW or less, you can plug it in to a socket.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -

Catalogue number?
The '.79' is it's annual energy rating (eg A-rated etc).
The oven elements will be 2KW or 2.5KW per element. It will have a bottom or rear element and a grill element of upto 1.5KW and so it will be possible to draw more than 13 Amps unless it is impossible to run both elements at the same time and hence requires connection to a hard-wired dedicated cooker circuit.
If the oven spec says it has to be hard-wired, then it has to be hard-wired.
What is the make and model?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Thanks, I don't think any single oven can use both grill and oven at the same time, have now checked Comets site and most use a 15 amp plug. I dont understand why some must be hard wired, and some have the plug I fancied the Baumatic BO616ss, but its one of the hard wired ones. All the Argos ones need hard wiring, even thou their less than 3KW. Its not put on the spec weather its got a plug or not, you just have to trawl round the Q & A on certain sites to find out.0
