Epson or HP Printer?

Hi i told someonre to look at the epson sx425w printer and someone came back saying this;

I'd forget it as a printer - it's slow, print
quality is merely moderate and the TOC (total cost of ownership) is likely
to be on the high side of average. HP C series printers can be had for the
same sort of money and are much better quality.

Are they correct as i thought epsom copy inks are the cheapest and their printers are very good

In the late '90s to early '00s I always went for Epson printers. The last one we got (2 or 3 years ago) was really bad though - the nozzles clogged so easily, causing a lot of wasted ink in the cleaning process (and therefore increased cost) and the output always had streaks or missing lines across it. I have no idea how other Epsons perform.

Anyway, I returned it under Sale of Goods Act legislation and got a Canon PIXMA iP4500 instead. I was amazed - it's quieter and smoother, the nozzles have never become blocked, it seems to have more sophisticated auto-calibration, print quality is superb (although I rarely print images, so I'm not sure about photo quality) and the ink lasts for ages. Chipped ink cartridges were the "normal" sort of price (£15 to £20 each), but I bought a chip-resetter on eBay for £20 and now buy chipless non-branded cartridges for about £1.50 to £2.00 each.

The only bad news is that I think they have probably discontinued this printer. Maybe they have replaced it with an equally good model, though...?

I had an HP printer but couldn't afford to run it as it only uses chipped ink cartridges. So I cut my losses and bought one of these Brother printers instead, it does the same as the HP but uses unchipped ink cartridges which are saving me a fortune.

I found Epson had excellent print quality but are not good if you do not use regularly as the heads clog.
  • Errr.... I'm very satisfied with my Kodak printer if that's of any use........

Buy a Brother printer if you want a reliable, low cost to run one, I have 3 of them, no problem.

If you've looked on Amazon, then presumably you've checked the star rating on the customer feedbacks? Read them!

Printers are extremely subjective, and you have to cross refer the pro's and con's of each model.
Found HP to be vey good at paper handling for instance.

I went for a Canon Pixima ip5000 (out of date now, but no chipped cartridges in this one.) because of the seperate ink cartridges for colour. Found it excellent in all respects, except, the coloured inks seem to disappear, even when I'm not using them. Good job I use cheap replacements.

What was the problem with the feedback?

The feedback on Amazon suggests that ink capacity is poor and there are no compatibles available.

Anyway santer, I'm surprised at you. You normally recommend the Epson Sx515W

At £65 it's a bit on the high side at the moment but if the OP bookmarks the link and checks back often he/she will find that the price will drop to around the £55 mark.

But most were happy with the results

Perhaps the rest should have looked here
