OK - so you think the credit ref agencies are just taking our money for the scoring/reports and doing nothing with the scores? Is this what you're saying?

Why would anyone on this site then tell you to check your score/report?

And now I realise I didn't default - I was just a day late with two payments. Report mentions I was "not significantly late" but that this "may affect" my score...

No one tells you to check your score. It's a waste of money.

They tell you to check your reports (all 3 of them) ;)

OK, I see what you're saying. So why oh why do we get a 'score'? What pointless nonsense is that? Is it just so us simpletons can see a barometer of sorts to gauge whether we're droopy or not? If 'fair' then 'fair' must mean something to somebody out there. Or else perhaps they should change their descriptions to something more abstract - "flamingo" or some other random typology.

Why don't the ref agencies come clean and tell us there's no translation with this scoring or weather chart?

Well, I've not 'defaulted'- I've just been a day late on two occasions. So where would that realistically leave me?

Someone else will be along to tell you where that leave you as you obviously not a very good listener IMO..

Don't worry you aren't the only "simpleton" to fall foul of that. I did too in my life previous to MSE :o

I think it's just a money making scam for them.

Well when ever they are tackled about it, they dance around a response but never actually admit that it's a figure plucked from the air.

Star-fire - you didn't *answer* my question, which is why I asked again. You told me my credit score (for want of a better word now!) would be 'very poor' - that is, when you thought I 'defaulted'. Now you know I did not 'default', this is not the same scenario I am querying. Or is it? Over to you - again.

Thanks Watalie - most of us (including you, I assume) have more to do with our time to know about scoring systems with credit checking. It's good to see you too are 'human' and able to read numbers on a screen too - it's only natural to read a score if it's been supplied!

Martin should say in big bold type on this site "don't bother checking the score" - would save us all money. I only found this site because I know a lady who obsesses about Martin's vouchers page... Perhaps now I'm introduced to it I will become a professional penny pincher!
  • You just don't like the answers you are getting do you and are canvassing for someone to tell you what you want so go on then, you will easily get accepted for any card you wish with the lowest rate possible. Does that help ? If it does, head straight to Broadmoor.

The reference agencies collect information and sell it. HSBC are not going to disclose to Barclays anything about your accounts but the established system of 1s and 0s and letters and other data gives the prospective lender to see how an applicant is managing their current commitments, or not as it may be. You also have to remember that this is all done by computers and thus, someone decided that if there is any default then this applicant will not proceed. In order to stand a chance of obtaining that product, you would need to wait until it "fell off" your file.

Any credit score produced by an agency is meaningless other then it acts as a very simple barometer. Each provider has their guidelines and you can see some of this on the Barclaycard site where you can semi check your status without having it hit your credit file - an indicative response if you will.

    It is addictive :)

And almost all the older and regular posters, including star-fire ;) are mines of information. You will get used to it :o
