Who holds the deeds on a mortgaged property?

Hi peeps,
On Monday DH & i will be going to the lenders branch to pay off the balance owed on our mortgage :j:j
The question i have is who is holding the deeds?
I assumed that it would be the lender but they tell me that it would be the solicitor who dealt with us during the sale.
I am aware that everything is done electronically now and that paper deeds are not needed anymore but our paper deeds have extra bits and pieces of information on them and we would like them as they are of historical interest.
So who has them and how do we obtain them?
TIA

Thanks Newgirlyi`m so excited :j:j
Hope that someone has some info about the deeds though as its driving me mad not knowing who to approach, the lender say they don`t but it seems strange that the solicitor would have them to me.
If the solicitor held them for every conveyancing job that came their way they would need a much larger office :rotfl:

Yea, the solicitor holds them. I wanted to put up a fence a number of years ago and one of my neighbours (who was American) was complaining that where I wanted to put the fence was part of her land.
I phoned the solicitor to see how to get a copy and he was able to forward it to me. Thankfully where I wanted to put the fence, was on my land so the solicitor sent the deeds to me so that I could show her.
Hope this helps.0 -
I thought the deeds were registered electronically with the land registry these days.. Am sure someone will come along to confirm that shortly...

OP, have you rang the solicitor they may have them?
Yes, the conveyancer does hold copies of all documents for quite a while. They need to for any claim against them.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

When I payed off my mortgage last year, the deeds were sent out to me by my lender (The Nationwide) a couple of weeks later .0

When I remortgaged a few years ago the Abbey sent my deeds to me.
It makes really interesting reading as it has all the owners over the years (Victorian house) and how much each paid, and that our part of the road was built several years after the other half. With plans and everything....:T
Some of the info is on waxed paper with the originals seals, don't get that on-line...0 -
when I paid off my mortgage the mortgage lender sent me back the deeds
I can't see any logic in the solicitor holding the deeds0 -
Hi guys
I'm a legal sec and yes we sometimes hold the Deeds for our clients. It might be because the clients never bothered to pick them up or they have asked us specifically to hold them safely for them.
Yes the Land Registry should have copies of the main Deeds BUT we have had it happen where the Land Registry mis-scanned a Deed and this caused expense and heartache for the seller.
Mortgage Companies used to hold them but they 'dematerilised' some years ago and either sent the Deeds to the client/their solicitor or even starting charging for holding the same.
Sunnyday - if your mortgage company don't have them contact your solicitors to see if they have them. If they don't its possible that you may have them hidden away somewhere, not even realising that they are Deeds! It does happen
Hope this helps and please, please don't destroy any Deeds/docs you have relating to your property. The Land Registry arn't infallible and mistakes do happen.Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

It would seem a bit odd for solicitors to hold the deeds for a property. The bank/building society obviously hold all the details regarding the purchase so why would they specifically not hold the deeds when they hold everything else? What would happen if you couldn't remember which solicitor you used 25 years ago to purchase the house? What happens to the deeds if/when the solicitors cease trading?0
