Leaking Bath

Options
Just discovered from downstairs room that we have a leak from the bath in the above room, as there is a yellow patch on the ceiling. After investigating this using my torch/running the water I could see that the leak was coming from near the plug. Is it possible for the leak to be coming from the plughole and should it be tightened etc. I have called out a plumber who is coming next Tuesday however my friend will come to have a look on Sat.

Obviously don't want to have to pay for a Plumber, any other ideas where the leak is coming from.

Thanks,

Garcon6.

  • get some of the stuff that fills holes in baths, it is a paste that sets hard like rock and we used this twice to mend 2 holes in our bath and it sets like stone, lasted about a year until we could get a new bathroom. Sorry I cant remember the name of it but if you go to a hardware store they will know :)

Check if it leaks with the plug in.

If it leaks with the plug "in" then it is the seal between the chrome plug hole trim and the bath leaking.
If it only leaks while water is actually running down the drain then it is one of the pipe joints leaking.

Both leaks are REALLY easy to re-seal and it should only cost you around £8 to buy everything you need to replace the complete arangement.

.... and the cure is to unscrew the fitting, lay a doughnut of sealant in a circle where the flat of the chrome will meet the bath, and replace the fitting.

If it only leaks while water is actually running down the drain then it is one of the pipe joints leaking.

...and you may need to renew one or more of the rubber seals within the pipework

Your choice, a few quid from B&Q and/or a plumber's merchant, and some DIY yourself, or £40 call-out charge and plumber's hourly......

    Honest, it's not rocket science.

the only difficult part of the job, is the access space underneath the bath, and getting the damn bath panel off.

I'd reiterate the above. My bath was leaking on draining but unscrewing the plug/waste fitting and a good blob of sealant solved it. Of it is a claw foot bath so was easy to access.

A friend of mine had a look and said that its not the waste pipe. We are quite sure that the leak is coming from the shower pipe, its hard to see from whereabouts. Around the shower it is tiled. I will contact our mortgage company as we have home insurance (buildings/contents) and hopefully they will send someone to assess the situation. To gain access the bath seal will have to be disturbed then the bath can be lifted up and i think that some of the tiles will have to come off as they will need to inspect the shower pipe leading from the wall to underneath the bath. Its a complicated job, not quite sure what to expect the insurance company to do.

Homeserve have been and they identified the leak coming from the taps and we put some silicon around the taps, we tested it and it was still leaking. Just below the taps is a chrome circular device which controls the opening/closing of the plughole, water is sprayed there and that's where its getting in as it's loose and cannot be sealed. On the circular chrome control there is a hole and i thought that there would be a screw to tighten.

The only way that this can be fixed would be taking the bath out which would also mean removing the bottom row of the tiles. Now we will call Homeserve again to see if we will be covered by our home insurance, as water is leaking causing damage to the floor rotting the wood as well as staining the ceiling in the room below. I am quite sure that Homeserve will try to get out of this one, anyone experienced with Homeserve and what shouldwe expect them to do?

    Thanks,
