I find it so sad to hear how some families are affected by bad step-parenting. I just wanted to show the positive side.
I was a once abused wife who remarried with 2 children, and had a third child with my new husband, and he adopted the older two.
Although my second marriage only lasted 17 years, he has been superb father to them all. When I left the marital home, two of the children were still living there, my son having moved out to live with his girlfriend - and we sorted the financial things out amicably.
We attend family gatherings together, he comes over for christmas dinner to me. When my son finished with one of his relationships he went home to dad. Someone said at the time 'but he's not his real father'? But it would not have occured to either of them to think of that.
Now there are 4 granddaughters as well - one of these is not a natural one of mine or his, and he's just the same with her. And recently she was the one who moved into his house to look after him because he has been ill. And we all work together as a family to try to help when he needs it.
It just didn't work with the two of us as a couple in the end, but I can't fault him as a father.

My husband has been a step-dad for 6 years now and like in your experience he has been great. Totally supportive and concerned for my daughters welfare and completely committed to helping her on her way in life; financially emotionally and any other way he can. Think she actually often prefers him to her own dad!
I have to say though that my daughters step mother is equally great, she has treated my daughter as her own and been a totally rock for over a decade.... step parents have a hard job and some of them are really good at it!!

My father married my step-mother when I was 9 years old (I'm 36 now) and I call her mother because that is what she was to me and my other brothers and sisters. She treated us no different from her son who I call my brother and my half brothers who I call and talk to on a regular basis and she is also my best friend. I don't know what we would have done or been without her in our lives. I even named my little girl after her as she means so much to me and we were lucky to have her in our lives.0
