Wondering if anyone can help? I have a toshiba equium laptop which is about three years old. I recently bought a new camcorder which records onto SD cards but when I transfer them to my Laptop to put on a disc it takes about four hours to copy half an hour of recording.
I have hours of film to tranfer o wondered if anyone knew if i could do anything to speed things up? I use cyberlink media show (came with camcorder) to copy.
Thanks

I guess you're connecting a card reader via USB, and put the SD card in that? If so, check in Device Manager to confirm that your USB ports are working normally. Sometimes if device drivers are not installed properly the USB ports will default to USB1.0/1.2 working. If so, it will work ~much~ slower.
If so, update the drivers to get things going properly again.0 -
Why can't you just copy/paste from the card to your HDD?0

No, I've been using the cable for the camcorder into the USB port, dont have a built in card reader but could buy a USB reader if that might speed things up.

Are you just trying to copy a file from SD card to laptop or is it a copy from camcorder to say DVD disk format?
Since you are using software its possible that the settings on the software is changing the filetype of the camcorder file to something more common like AVI which is going to take time.
If its not a straight file copy you probably need to give a bit more information to get a complete answer because it depends on what type of output file your camcorder generates and what format you want your video files on disk.
The reason why it takes so long is that you are not just copying you are also transcoding and possibly compressing the files from on type to another and some conversions take longer than others.
At the straight forward quickie side if your camcorder generated .MOD files and you wanted to view on any laptop you could rename the .MOD to .MPG and then just burn the files to a DVD and then play on Windows Media Player.
However if you wanted to play the file on a dvd player you need to transcode to VOB or possibly AVI which could take up to 2 hours depending on the processing power of your computer0 -
Just get a usb card reader like this plug it into usb slot on laptop and plug the sd card from your camera
USB card reader range from a couple of quid to £20 but most are under £10

What speed is your SD card, and how big is the video you are transferring?Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

Copy/Paste is the most basic of computer operations, to take a copy of a file from one place, and duplicate it in another. It can also be used within documents to copy text from one location to another within the document.
Your SD card will have some files on it created by the camcorder.
You want to copy those files onto your HDD to do something with them.
Go to Computer or My Computer. Open or Explore the SD card and find the files you want to copy.
Go to Computer or My Computer and open or explore a folder on your hard drive where you want to place the files.
Right-click on the file(s) in the SD card, select Copy, then in the HDD folder. right-click, and select Paste to place a copy there.
As stated above, the camcorder files may not be in the right format for writing directly to DVD, but transcoding them from HDD is likely to be quicker than from the memory card0 -
Thank you for all the replies, I think, firstly, I will buy a reader tomorrow and see if that makes things easier. At the moment I'm recording roughly an hour of film at a time and it takes at least three or even four hours at a time.
If that fails I will try to look at changing the file type but I'm not much of an expert so hopefully I wont need to do that.
Thanks again for all your help

The camera will probably record it at mp4, I have a small camera that records video too and it takes a small amount of time to transfer 30-40mb of files dont normally record large files even though its hd 1-2 minutes of video. My camera comes supplied with usb docking station although in do occasion use a usb reader. I suspect from what I read of your posts its copying the file size that is taken so long rather than converting video formats0
