Car Insurance - commuter/not

Hi MSE-ers.
I was just wondering how much difference (if any) it makes if you don't use your car to travel to work. When I renewed I was asked this question, and I stated that I do not use it to travel to work (or for work). Does this save much money? I think it should, as rush hour must be one of the most likely times to have an accident.
I'm asking because at the moment I live in a city, don't drive my car to work as I live close by, and pay about £550 on insurance. When I lived at my parents in a nice commuter town and commuted by car every day (about 30 mins each way), my insurance was much cheaper, even though I'd say I was at more risk of needing to make a claim. I guess the insurers are more interested in where I live, rather than how much I drive.
Just wondered!
Thanks.

It might have been cheaper because of the postcode where your parents live and nothing to do with the journey to or from work. You could work nightshift and be travelling to/from work when there is nobody else on the road hardly. Plus, the cost of motor insurance has risen significantly recently which is also why its probably went up.0 -
It depends on the company.
I'm working for a car insurer at the moment, and they don't charge extra to commute to one fixed place of work, and a nominal fee for commuting as part of a job (to different branches, for example).
Other insurers will charge for this, and it depends on all your other risks as to how much.0 -

Other insurers will charge for this use but not your company?? How do you know this for a fact ?0
