can banks charge 2 months intrest in 1 month?

Hi can anyone help I have been charged twice for interest on my halifax card this month, it says on my statement charge intrest for dec 2010, and this months normal intrest. When I rang the bank they said it was because they made a mistake and didnt charge me last month (feb) I have checked and they never charged me in feb but I did pay Dec and Jan. Can they put it on twice this month and not tell me they doing it, as I have now gone over my limit,
Please help they ringing me back tomorrow I told them I was going to seak advice. Thanks in advance for any help :money::mad:

  • Surely you noticed that a hefty chunk of your income hadn't been taken from one month? I think they're entitled to, as it could be a mistake by them or a computer error that allowed this. They're not doign anything wrong as you've signed and given them permission to take money from your account every month. Also they're not taking out in "advance" but in arrears, so I don't think there's a problem with this...

  • I was charged twice this month and noticed it straight away, last month i saw that there was no interest charged but didnt worry about it because they already owed me a months interest from october when they made a mistake again and charged me double the amount, they told me it would be refunded in the next few months so when I was not charged in Feb I thought it was the refund from Oct, They have explained that lots of Halifax credit card customers were charged double this month as it was a mistake THEY made in Feb. When I asked about the refund from October They had forgoten to process it. They are now refunding me Octobers interest but I still dont think they can send a statement with 2 lots of interest in one month and also state it was for DEC when it was for FEB.
  • Ouch! With the extra info provided (post 2) it appears to be a trend. It looks worrying, for it to happen once is a mistake, for it to happen twice is carelessness. I think it'll be wise to chase them up tomorrow and see what you can do and I hope it's speedily resolved.

Did you not query it with them when there was no interest charged in Feb?

I think if it's pushed you over your limit, considering they've made a mistake, you should be able to argue for getting any charge for going over the limit refunded; try asking nicely and pointing out that it was due to their error. I'd also pay up to get back within your limit asap - maybe offer to do this over the phone at the same time as asking for the refund. I'm not sure whether this is actually an entitlement, as you should have expected the interest charges at some point if it wasn't on your statement last month, but banks will often waive fees as a gesture of goodwill, especially if they have made an error - it can't hurt to ask.

ETA: Having seen your next post, as it's a mistake made more than once, I might be asking for a "goodwill payment" on top of getting charges refunded (if any were made). Try writing to them if you can't resolve it over the phone. Good luck getting it sorted.
  • No I never questioned it in Feb cause I thought it was my refund they owed me from october. Thanks anyway I will see what they say tomo I Cant afford to to get back into credit i just dont have the money,
