I am shocked if this is the case - are you meant to dash into the house within hours of your relative dying, to clear away all their personal possessions, in order to minimise any chargeable rent? Is there no grace period? *shakes head in despair*

Nope there is no grace period at all. My Nan died on the Saturday of a bank holiday. Nothing was done till the Tues, with the death being registered on the Wens. Once we had the death cert we popped into the council to tell them about the death. They expected the keys there and then, and seemed shocked when we refused. We did manage to get them to agree to give us 3 more weeks but it took a lot of arguing.
My sister and I dealt with everything and between us we have 7 school ages children. So as you can imagine we were run off our feet.
The council did send us a bill for the 4 weeks rent. They also sent us a bill for over £1500 for removing the few bits of furniture we simply couldn't move. 3 piece suite wardrobe, a yellow pages book and and a pile of empty boxes we'd not put out for recyling (they took photos to show what they'd had to remove)Neither of us drive, we'd taken boxes home on the bus!!! so couldn't move the last few bits, and neither of us could afford to hire a van (plus we couldn't drive it)
I called and told them the estate had nothing, insurance had paid for funeral with nothing left over. Had to put it into writing. They did call again about six mths later so told them again there was no money in estate. Asked me to write in again, I agreed but didn't. Heard nothing since.

dealing with our council left a really sour taste tbh, no compassion at all.
