Online dating automatic renewal disaster!

Hi There.
This is quite embarrassing.
I recently tried out a special offer which was 1 month full subscription to a dating site for £5.
What I didn't do is read the terms and conditions properly!
Yesterday my one month special offer must have finished...so they took a payment of £149.94 out of my bank account to pay for a 6 month membership!
Argh!!!!! Please help!
I'm already on a debt management program so can not afford to lose this money!
I have emailed the company (be2) twice but have only received an automatic response so far.
Does anyone know whether I am likely to be able to get my money back?!
(Please do not patronize me for making this stupid mistake, I am fully aware of what an idiotic mistake I have made.)
:(

Ouchness! I guess throw yourself of their mercy and see if you get any results. But somehow I doubt it, it's how they make their money.

Don't be embarrassed - you're not the first one to be caught out with auto-renewals.

Try, as suggested, appealing to their better nature. Keep calm and polite with them and ask if they can either refund the amount in full or ask if they can offer just one months membership instead (and cancel the rest).

Also, make absolutely certain that you cancel any future subscriptions - and try to get this confirmed in writing from them.

    Good luck.

I think probably everyone who has ever been on a dating site has been caught out by this once..... they are all the same, from what I can gather.

You'll know for next time, but as for this time - you have probably kissed goodbye to the money. But I wish you luck anyway.

And if they won't cancel the subscription, think of the nice people you may meet in the next 6 months. Maybe even someone rich and your debt management days will be far behind you!
  • Haha! Thanks bcl999... but if you are right about using the site to meet someone I'll eat my hat! If it had been a good reputable site I may have a chance of meeting my (ideally rich) Prince Charming. Unfortunately the site is RUBBISH. Never mind eh!!
I will let you all know if I do manage to get any money back. I have already cancelled the 'auto renewal' so that this won't happen again in 6 months.
I definitely will try to ask them if they will change the renewal from the 6 month deal to a lesser offer. They are in fact offering a '50% off' offer for their 3 month deal (works out at around £14/month in one lump sum for the 3 months = approx £45) so to be honest I could say that I would have been more inclined to go for the renewal with that offer - NOT the 6 month deal at £149.94!!!

Oh well, there's always the National Lottery, I suppose.

Seriously, though, let us know how you get on - with the refund that is, not your love-life!
  • It is useful to see that other people have fallen for this SCAM as Be2.com claim that they are successful in love!!!! WHAT A JOKE.

It would be useful if we could find out how to deal with a company based in Luxembourg as the UK consumer right laws do not apply and this is half the problem.

If you wanted the protection afforded by UK laws, perhaps you would've been better off using a UK company.

If you think they have broken any Luxembourg laws, perhaps you can take them to court there?

But have they broken any laws?
It appears that you have entered a legally binding contract.

By the way... have you now cancelled the agreement, so that no more money gets taken next year/month?
