I would be wary of installing such software, as value my privacy, although I'm a safe surfer.

There used to be a cancer research project that utilised pcs when their screensaver was on which would be a good use of your pc instead. However, the one project I know about closed in 2007. If anyone knows of an alternative, it would be good to share the link!

World Community Grid is probably the biggest and has a couple of cancer research projects on the go at the moment

The big daddy of all the BOINC projects is the original SETI (Search for ET)

This program (GomezPEER) that is in question here is OK as long as you dont have any issues. I mean in terms of if they will pay or not. I had been using that program for about a few years until recently. I had applied for it years back and got in. It worked well till recently, when all of a sudden they deactivated my account.(Now I didnt do anything I wasnt supposed to, I just installed it and I stuck to my work not messing with the program.) I tried contacting them about it and a month later they say my account was deactivated cause ABNORMAL data was detected. They donot offer any other support, or help in sorting the issue.

Also be wary of payments from them cause my account on their site got hacked and for some reason they tool 3-4 months to sort it out. I had to miss out on payments for all those months.

The program doesnt spread any viruses. I dont think it does any P2P work either. From what I have seen it does stuff like website testing for companies that pay to get that kind of work done. Their rate or pay is very low, but it is still something. Also note, they may say the program uses minimal amounts of data. This is quite untrue, although it cannot be predicted as it depends on what WORK it is doing. If you are planning on using it then I would suggest using some traffic limiter software like NETLIMITER to set limits for the traffic usage.

7.2 units @ 12.5p is 90p which strangely enough is the same as they pay.

You're absolutely right - I'm not sure where I got the £3 figure from! Thanks for correcting :T
  • After finding this on this forum i installed it, it has been running for about a week now, there has been no issues with viruses or spyware, at the time of writing it has clocked up $0.56, not a fortune, but give it a couple of months and it will add up i am sure. I still don't know wether they pay, but initial searches on the web suggests that they mostly do. I was activated after 2 days, I have not seen the broadband issues come out yet, but according to my account it does not seem to be that much extra.
