  • Be very careful, we did this and suddenly our downloads were going far in excess of what we were allowed.
Was going to cost £12.00 after 2 months 'warnings', but BT very kindly waived this after we queried it and they looked into it.
Our normal usage is practically nothing!!
Please, look at it very carefully - since we uninstalled the programme, we have gone back to normal.

    Big thanks to BT.:T

$0.001 per minute? So nearly 17 hrs to made a dollar...It basically works out at about 90p for a day...

This is interesting in the T&Cs
Unique PEER Account. Gomez PEERs are limited to one unique PEER account. A unique PEER account is defined as the application information from one individual that has one username and one e-mail address. Gomez PEERs may have multiple Systems running the Software, but all such Systems must be identified with and registered under the same PEER account (username and e-mail address). If duplication of accounts is detected, Gomez reserves the right to cancel payment and/or deactivate all of the accounts involved in the duplication.

So, I guess that means there would be no problem in creating virtual environments with this system installed?

I'd be wary of installing any such software on my computer. The word Peer also makes me run a mile as I thought peer software was notorious for spreading viruses, and therefore capable of crippling your computer and stealing personal data.

Yep - and peer to peer is often used to distribute illegal downloads.

I'd be very surprised if many (any) people in the UK were with a broadband provider that allowed this sort of usage in their terms.

There used to be a cancer research project that utilised pcs when their screensaver was on which would be a good use of your pc instead. However, the one project I know about closed in 2007. If anyone knows of an alternative, it would be good to share the link!

Keep in mind a desktop PC uses about 300w just sitting there. More if the monitor's on. Laptops are quite a bit less.

    That's about 8 units a day..

Best case scenario; A computer using 300w of power, turned on for 24 hours, will use 7.2 kWh (also known as 7.2 'units'). Each unit will cost about 12.5p (although it depends on your electricity tariff). So leaving your computer turned on for 24 hours will cost about £3. Even you get paid $1.44 a day (90p) you'll still be making a loss of over £2!

And that's without beginning to throw repair costs due to computer viruses into the equation!

Isn't the term 'peer' here rather different though? With p2p you can be sharing questionable files (i.e. exe's with hidden viruses). Here, you are a peer of Gomez...you're computer is doing the work for them. It would of course be possible that the app sends you to a site with a virus, however, i'm not sure that the Java app would actually download any files..it'll probably just be timing an HTTP request.

Of course, the idea behind Gomez could just be a cover for getting people to install an app on their PC but what it's really doing is stealing personal details. I very much doubt that this is the case.

You only make money if you are in their target area for testing, I did it for a whole month should have got lots but cause I wasn't in the area they wanted that month I got nothing why cause they never changed me from pending to active even though my computer did the work. Total scam its all in the T&C just cause you do all this work for them doesn't mean they will pay out and no way to tell if they used your computer results anyway.

7.2 units @ 12.5p is 90p which strangely enough is the same as they pay.

I tend to leave a couple of laptops on all dy and never considered the cost even at 80 w per box that is nearly 2kwh.
