My Sony Vaio Windows XP PC is quite old now - about 9 years old ! - and has gradually been running slower and slower over the years. However, its recently developed a new problem and I like some advice on what it may be.
For about 4 consecutive days, once I logged onto the computer it loaded the home page but then just froze, so I couldnt click on anything on the home page, to open any programmes or even click on start etc. Ctlr-Alt-Delete didnt work either. It would also go deadly quiet - which is worrying as normally its making a right racket !! I would have to switch off at the power switch and then reload and the second, or third time  it would eventually load ok. It also froze in the same way at the weekend when I was working in a word file, after the computer had been on for a few hours.
Does it sound like a hardware problem, something wearing out / dying or could it be a software problem that I can fix ?
Ive done all my usual virus checks - run AVG/Zonealarm firewall, ran scans with malwarebytes and spybotsearchanddestroy and all found nothing so I dont think its a virus ?
I dont really want to buy a new PC but at the same time if its a hardware problem then I guess it would make more sense to just buy a new laptop for £300 than invest cash in such an old machine ?....
Suggestions would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks

You haven't posted what hard-drive space or RAM you have, but this should get you started.
When was the last time you cleared out temporary files (internet explorer and windows)?
If it's been a while, try installing CCleaner and run the two scans on the left hand side, making sure you back up the registry when asked.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
I'll check the hard drive and ram figures tonight and post some details later.
I have found the previous post on here 'how to speed up your computer in less than 60 minutes' which includes using the ccleaner and I was going to try working through this but wasnt sure whether I was just wasting my time....if it sounded more terminal than this !!
Youve reassured me that its worth a go trying to see if I can clean things up...here's hopingProud to be dealing with my debtsDebt at Light Bulb Moment (January 2011): £21,953Debt at current level (Nov 2013): £4,567.50Debt free wanabee date: Dec 2014 :j0 -
GIven the age, its likely to be a hardware issue
But may as well see what we can do before condemning it
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -

Sure, give that a go
but as you say, theres every chance its hardware related:idea:0 -
Silly question. Have you cleared the cache? You're probably right though that it's just on its last legs.Debt at worst: £33000 (Feb 2011). Present debt: £25610 (Apr 2012)

I would start by doing a reinstall of windows. Given its age it's likely to be crudded up with all sorts of stuff from over the years so having a spring clean will probably only give limited results a clean reinstall would seem to make more sense instead at this point. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
Off topic but well done for still having a PC after 9 years, according to some thats practically impossible.
On topic, given its age as stated above theres a good chance its hardware. I hope you've got back ups of everything important to you from the computer.0 -
Thanks for all the replies. Ill post the hijackthis log, hopefully tonight, and hopefully somebody can advise me if there is anything nasty lurking on it. Meanwhile Ill follow the cleanup tips and see if this helps.
Then if all else fails, I could try the windows reinstall but id prefer to leave this as a last resort in case I botch it up !
Ive got back ups of most stuff, important documents, photos etc on discs and memory sticks, just in case. Only thing Ive not copied is itunes stuff because its such a large folder but I believe there is a workaround with software to reinstall from the ipod if needs be so not too worried about that.
I'll post back tomorrow with an updateProud to be dealing with my debtsDebt at Light Bulb Moment (January 2011): £21,953Debt at current level (Nov 2013): £4,567.50Debt free wanabee date: Dec 2014 :j0 -
you may need to do this in safe mode with networking (hold f8 at boot, and connect to a router with an ethernet cable) if it won't startup properly
uninstall zonealarm, spybot, avg, then turn on windows firewall and install avast 6 free, and follow the how to speedup thread.
clearing caches with ccleaner or any other method (can be done automatically in your browser settings) won't fix slowness, but will tidy your hard disk up.
click start, then run, then
chkdsk c: /F
answer Y to the run it at boot question
then reboot
powering off without shutting down can corrupt your hard disk, this will check and fix any problems.!!
