I've done it on a few occasions when I didn't have shampoo. I used it diluted in the water though, not applied directly, so it didn't irritate him.
  • Basically no.

The PH of washing-up liquid is about 9; the PH of your dog's skin is about 6.5-7

    That's a big difference.

(Human shampoo is usually about 5.5, so again not good.)
  • no dont use it- Use baby shampoo if desperate, I think the tescos basics etc is only about 15p or something and smells like diluted johnsons shampoo, baby talc brushed through works well for a quick dry brush if dogs a bit pongy but washing up liquid is a lot harsher and likely to strip oil from woofys fur xx

I've washed our lab with Fairy Liquid before. Not my shampoo of choice but fine once in a while. You must, must, make sure the dog is rinsed well so there is no residue left on him that may irritate his skin.

(I ran this by the vet during a chat once and he saw no reason why it couldn't be used occasionally.) I wash my own hair with it from time to time too to get rid of build up. As does my hairdresser (her own hair I mean, not mine :)).

Would second this - not all the time but in an "emergency" situation as long as it's diluted and with VERY good rinsing it won't do any harm.

Thanks maybe washing up liquid would be ok just this once then, his fur has a lot of motor oil in it (garage dog).

TBH you may well need to use something like Fairy to get this out anyway - my dog rolled in something really (REALLY) greasy and disgusting and the dog shampoo didn't shift it so it was a 2nd bath in Fairy.

They sometimes use diluted washing up liquid to clean oiled wild birds and don't think they'd do that if it was very harmful.

The best thing to use to remove motor oil from fur is vegetable oil and then just bath as normal.
