HSBC/Visa Debit card help please

Apologies if this is in the wrong thread but can someone clear something up for me?
I've just been on the phone to HSBC to ask if there would be any charges if I bought something from a US website with my Visa Debit card.
After keeping me on hold for ages, he came back and said there would be a £9 charge for making a purchase abroad! :mad:
Can someone tell me if this is right???? If so, they are royally taking the p*ss.

They're quoting the 'Worldpay' charge.
The 'General' debit card charge is shown in your account fees document...
