Extended warranty help needed

I bought a DVD/VCR combi (so my kids could watch old videos)at the end of December 2009 from Very and took at an extra 12 months warranty till December 2011. Anyway the VCR part has developed a fault so I called them in the hope that they would send an engineer. They said it is uneconomical to repair (don't know how they can say that without seeing it!) so I've been given two options:

A refund of £128 (current market value of product)
or
A replacement product worth £160 (which is what I paid)

My problem is that there is nothing in stock which matches that value - the nearest one is £250 which means I've got to pay another £90. What annoys me even more is although I paid £160 it should have been £200 as I had a discount code when I bought it.

Can I demand them to send an engineer or honour the £200 (I'd be willing to pay an extra £50 but not £90 for a replacement).

It also amazes me that they won't send an engineer as I could simply "say" it's not working and get a refund...

While the position they have put you in does kind of suck, they are technically in the right.

They have to offer you a repair, refund or exchange. Depending how long you've has it, it is often a partial refund.

You could try and get more out of them, I'm sure someone will turn up with advice for that.

My advice would be to weigh up accepting an exchange with the same warranty (ending dec 2011) or buying new and getting a new warranty.

Good luck however you play it :)

Can they just issue a credit note? Personally I would do away with VCR nowdays and there are even gadgets that will convert VHS to DVD. So why not buy a decent PVR or a PS3 and play videos either on a USB stick or wirelessly from the PC?
