There isn't a simple answer, most of the local area isn't good if you don't have a secure car park (google "Meadowell riots").
Unless I could get someone to give me a lift there I'd go to Newcastle Central Station & take the bus service to the ferry terminal. You can also get a Metro to Meadow Well or Percy Main & a connecting bus to Royal Quays but I wouldn't recommend it with luggage0 -
we have used this route twice in recent years on both occasions we had a meal in newcastle prior to leaving and booked breakfast for morning, also a good meal on main street in amsterdam and breakfast before we leave ship folllowing morning,we did once take greggs sausage rolls and sandwiches for a snack while sailing,no one stopped us and i dont think they would bother about drink in bars shops on board sell cans etc0

When I did the trip a few years ago you had the choice of a sightseeing coach tour with no stops, or the coach to Amsterdam and pick up about 6 hours ish (I can't quite remember!) later.

I went to Amsterdam this summer on from Newcastle, it takes about an 1 and 30 to get there via the bus. We stayed a few nights and really enjoyed it. The ibis we booked through the DFDS website was excellent.
The crossing to Amsterdam was good but not so good on the way back, we took a sea sickness tablet, had a good meal and had a few drinks and was fine. I also won 80 Euros on the fruit machine which paid for my meal. Food is expensive but there is a cafe and vending machines

First of all thank you to the OP of this thread, and a big thank you to all the people who have have offered their advise. had a look at going up by train but when you add it up there is no differance between that and driving up and parking at the Dock.plus you are not reliant public transport on a sunday.Cheers0

I managed to book return rail travel from norfolk to Newcastle by using the firstscotrail half price link(expired now,but comes up from time to time)and seperate single "advance 1" journeys on GNER.Total price £15.20 each. From Newcastle central station the DFDS double decker takes you to the port for £3 each way.0

Hey we're going on Friday - any last minute hints (apart from keep away from 'coffee shops' and the red light area)?
How much is the Heineken brewery tour now, and is it worth it??!!0 -

The Red light area is the best entertainment there is, I've always found it perfectly safe( not that I'm a regular!)Filiss0
