Would be good to get it tested for piece of mind (never know who did the wiring) Also the insulation will start to degrade after time, so if it is old wiring then best get it sorted now before you decorate and then realise it needs doing

Apparently houses should get a total rewire every 10 years. (hubby is a spark)

Scrap that actually - think it should only be tested every 10 years

Right folks catch yourselves on. I said scrap that didn't I. And don't tar everyone with the same brush. My hubby works in industry so he doesnt give two hoots whether a house needs rewired every 5 years or every 50 years.

I was just trying to give u a bit of info, but i got mixed up-hence why I said scrap it.

No offence meant, but it was obvious that that statement was never going to be unchallenged.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Thanks all. I had a snoop around today and the electrics look pretty modern. I'll wait for an official response from someone qualified though.

what is your attitude to risk?
my father bought his house new build in 1964, it has never been rewired, everything still works and he couldn't care less about electricians saying it needs rewiring - ie they will tell you anything which scares you into spending money with them

get it inspected (periodic inspoection report as stated) and then take your pick of the very high quotes for the "vital" work

there is a good chance your fathers house has rubber coated cables ..

they go brittle dry up and crack open with age ..and will probably be getting to that stage now ..visually inspect the cables to see if they are cracked ..if so. advice him to have rewire ..before the house burns down

Ive been up in attics where whole runs of RUBBER cables had the insulation dropping off them in little crescents exposing bare wires ..

    all the best.markj
