Uh Oh, Xmas Cake help

I made a christmas cake using Delia's recipe at the end of October and erm ... completely forgot about it:eek:

When it was cooked, I fed it with brandy and wrapped it up and put it in the back of the cupboard!!!

God knows how I forgot about it, but I noticed it a minute ago, all wrapped neatly in foil and thought 'Uh Oh'

Is the cake still safe to eat/ice/feed???

Have I got to bin it??

HELPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!! xx

well let me put it this way, if yours is fubarred.. so's mine!!!

seriously though: the brandy acts as a preservative, esp in delias.. i would give it another feeding though, now. HAve a sniff before you do. if it smells cakey/okay then it'll be fine. :)

    good luck!

I agree with the previous posts....if it looks and smells ok it will be fine.

Christmas cakes and puddings etc are meant to be made early to give them time to mature and absorb all the alcohol that we feed them. ;)

I made a tomato soup cake end of october. And that seems fine. The dog isn't complaining. It's taking her a while to get through it though... :D

You Eeeenglish are so strange. The Xmas cake - is that the moist weird stuff made with mince ( ) and brandy? Or the drier stuff with lots of preserving sugared fruit and preserving brandy?
(Why you need a dessert soooooo filling at Xmas is beyond me - not enough turkey and sprouts?)

As long as it hasn't grown a coat and smells nice then it does sound like it should be fine.

PS I'm trying to be funny, not rude.
You should see what my traditions are

Well, at least I haven't put tomato soup in my cake - that would be weird :rotfl: :rotfl: What are your traditions Agutka ?

The cake should be fine Meerustar, they're supposed to keep. Traditionally the bottom tier of your wedding cake is supposed to be saved for the first baby's christening (which in our case was about 4 months :o )

Hi, Meerustar! I'd agree with above posters, with one proviso. I once wrapped a christmas pudding in foil, and when I opened it, the pudding had eaten into the foil and it had holes in it. Wasn't going to take the risk of aluminium poisoning (implicated in Alzheimers) so had to chuck it. I now wrap first in greaseproof, then in foil.

Hey, Blue Peter says it's okay. And it was delicious, when fresh....!

*desperately trying to think of something that could possibly be worse than mince in a cake*
My traditions? Erm... We get the whole Xmas thing over and done with (special meal, presents, santa, carols etc) on Xmas Eve. Xmas day is just for eating and has never felt special to me. By boxing day I'm desperate for the shops to open up and the sales to begin (although there are only so many sofas and white goods you can own).
Hence I've been getting into the Xmas spirit since October! To cram as much in as possible.
I'm sure I'll think of something worse soon... (I asked hubby and he just chuckled at me)

It's not mince as in ground beef or pork by the way, its raisins, apples and fruit bits and all sugary! ;)

I never understood why those two were named so similar though!! :D

It will be fine. I make my (Delia recipe) cakes at the end of September, and feed them every week or so until I marzipan them at the beginning of December.

Unwrap it, feed it, and then wrap it in fresh greasproof and foil.
