Who elsee uses PIPEX?

I've been with Pipex for many years - no problems till now in the form of throttling - basically at 4.00pm-midnight they chop the speed so using iPlayer or any other streaming service is a no no.

I havn't complained yet and would like to know a couple of things:

1. Anyone else on Pipex and do you get throttled?

2. Recommendations for an alternate isp, needs to provide at least 8Meg speed and unlimited download/month.

cheers

    Hi

I left Pipex about 4 years ago and they were throttling then. Surprised that they still have any customers.

Is 8 meg your actual speed or is it capped at that?

I'm with Be now and so far no throttling/traffic management-check your exchange: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search and see what's available

thanks for that reply - I pay for 8meg I get 1.2meg (speedtest) so I think I'm off to another isp

Be and eclipse where ones I thought of. My exchange is not LLU enabled so I'm not sure if that will matter.

How long did it take to move to Be and how trouble free was it?

    cheers

I moved 3 of my friends from Pipex, on one when Tiscali (now TalkTalk) took over they reduced the speeds by half, eg sync at exchange was with pipex 8192 down 448 up was reduced to 4096 down and 288 up, they were only 100yds from the exchange, and I know of one other person who changed from Pipex to Tiscali, and his speeds are lower than they should be.

You need to put your phone number into BT checker and see what is suggested for speeds, You will never get 8m throughput if you are on maxdsl, although it may synch at that (mine does) the max throughput I have ever seen is just over 7m (good day and following wind !), as there are overheads to be taken into account.

If your exchange does not have LLU, then all ISPs will be using the BT IPstream. There are now very few who offer unlimited per month.

If you can do your downloading/whatever overnight then Plusnet does not count that to your allowance.
  • What speed is your line good for? Changing ISP might not be any different. I Just used the BT line checker below. Says my line is good for 1Mb but even Orange manage to provide 1.6Mb down it.

BT checker says 8meg - I can see the exhange from my house - virtually next door and this is some other data:

    BT Wholesale information
ADSL status: Enabled as of 11/02/2004
ADSL Max status: Enabled as of 31/03/2006
    SDSL status: Not available
    21CN WBC status: Not available
    FTTC status: Not available

    cheers to all that replied

  • Ahhh 1.2Mb is rubbish then .. You definitely need a new ISP.

the point is I used to get a fair speed from pipex, but in the last month after 4.00pm its rubbish, so i know they are throttling. Its never been marvelous but now its like dial up.

So I'm going to propose they quit throttling or cut my bill down to a pro-rata speed rate i.e. 1/8th or I leave.

I know what the answer will be so I need to pick another isp asp!

Are you sure it is not a problem with the line/internal wiring? But still change your ISP if yours won't help. The BT checker tells me I should get up to 6M but I did once clock it at 6.8+ albeit at at 0300 on a Sunday and I may have had 1 or too many  that evening.

  • I've been with Pipex since 2003 and in 2008 I upgraded to the (at the time) Pipex Business Lite package which has prioritised network traffic which means I don't get the residential "slow-down".

It's only £17.04 inc Vat for a 25GB limit and up-to 8Mbps connection but looking at the website now - oops, it's changed to TalkTalk Business now :rotfl:the price is still the same but it looks like you get unlimited downloads and a possible up-to 24Mbps, if TalkTalk are at your local exchange.

Never had any problems since, as far as I was told the Pipex Business side was still supported by the original Pipex team.
